Jasminum nitidum, also known as Star Jasmine, is a quick-growing vine that is native to the Admiralty Islands in the Pacific north of New Guinea. It is a member of the olive family and is known for its glossy, green foliage and intensely fragrant flowers. This plant can be grown on a trellis, used as a ground cover, or planted in a container. It blooms from April to September and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
Star Jasmine prefers full sun to semi-shade but will tolerate deep shade and less than ideal soils, including sandy soils. It is drought tolerant once established, but regular moderate watering during hot dry periods will improve performance and blooming. Fertilize at least once per year with a balanced fertilizer to ensure the best results.
This plant is reasonably cold tolerant, can be grown in USDA Zone 9-11, and can survive temperatures as low as the 30's Fahrenheit for a short duration. It is suitable for growing near seaside and can tolerate some salt spray. In northern climates, it can be grown in a container and brought indoors during the cold season. If grown in a pot, it should be placed in a medium size pot with drainage holes and given additional nourishment with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Make sure to check the soil daily to ensure adequate watering, and move the pot indoors before the first frost.
