Josephs coat, copperleaf, calico plant, bloodleaf, joyweed and parrot leaf - all these common names in reference to the often brilliantly colored leaves which provide foliage contrast to gardens and container plantings. Best foliage colors are developed in full sun. May also be grown indoors as a houseplant as long as it is sited in a bright, sunny location and soils are kept moist. Grown exclusively for its colorful foliage - rich purple to burgundy leaves. Forms spreading foliage mounds to 12-30" tall.

Pelican flower - large flower variety. One of the most popular ornamental vines. Brown flower is very unusual-looking. Very fast-growing and vigorous, can cover a fence just in one season.
The Aristolochia gigantea will inspire a sense of marvel to anyone who gazes upon it. This truly spectacular blossom produces a pouch that in some cultivars is almost 2 feet long and more than a foot across. Ivory veins network across a burgundy velvet background as the flower unfurls. Heart-shaped, light green leaves, about 6 inches in length, adorn this easy-to-grow vine. The plant blooms at a young age and grows in full sun or partial shade.
In some sources, Aristolochia gigantea is considered as Aristolochia grandiflora var. Hookeri. The cultivation of Aristolochias is undemanding. Sun lovers that appreciate some shade in hotter inland areas, they adapt to any soil that drains well. Any pruning necessary to contain or shape the plants should be done in late winter or early spring. Cultivation is easy, and growth can be tamed.

Bauhinia blakeana - Hong Kong Orchid Tree. The most beautiful of all orchid trees. The largest flowers, brightly colored. Winter bloomer. Very hard to find!

Red Kapok tree is a remarkable tree with spectacular display of bright red flowers, which bloom during the spring season. The flowers are large, showy, and have a sweet fragrance, making them popular with birds and insects. The tree's blossoms are also used in traditional medicine for their medicinal properties.

The seeds of the Carob Tree, all being the same size, are used as weights in eastern Mediterranean countries (the word "carat" comes from the Arabic name of the seeds). So the modern word carat owes its derivation to the same pathway that named the Carob, which was originally used by Arab jewelers to weigh their precious metals and stones!
Carob is cultivated for its abundance of pods, rich in sugar when ripe, which are used for the production of alcohol or ground with the seeds to make carob bean meal for animal feed.
