Container tropical garden Q&A
How to growing a container garden?
Container gardening has become very popular and is a great way to grow tropical plants that may need to be protected in the winter if you are in an area that gets too cool for them. The list of plants that can be grown in a container is far too large to cover in depth here, but know that most plants other than very large trees or shrubs can be grown in a container. Talk to your nursery specialist to find out if the plants you love would be suitable for growing in a pot or grow bag.
Which plants are good for window boxes?
If you are lucky enough to have some window boxes for growing, there are a number of plants that will work well in them. Try mixing hanging vines with upright flowers for a great visual effect. Keep in mind that you need to pick plants based on the amount of sunlight they will get in your window box. Plants that like partial sun may do best on the east side of the house where they will get the morning sun before it gets too hot and then will be shaded in the afternoon. If your window boxes are on the south side of the house, you should choose container plants for full sun.
Can I grow fruit trees in containers?
Yes, in fact this is a great way for people with very small yards or those who live in apartments or condos with a porch or deck to grow their own fruit. There are several varieties of both Mango and Avocado that are dwarf trees and they will grow just fine in a container. You may need to move them to larger pots over time, but you can keep them trimmed to a reasonable size of 6-10 feet and they will still produce plenty of fruit.
Do I need a different fertilizer for plant in containers?
It is very easy to over fertilize container plants and burn the roots. Therefore, we suggest using Sunshine Boosters amino acid based fertilizers. They are safe to use with every watering and because they are made with amino acids, they will not burn your plants and will be readily absorbed and used by them. Find the right Sunshine Booster formula for your plants and everyone will be happy.
