Mucuna holtonii is a species of plant in the bean family, which is pollinated by bats. Bats are able to detect if the flowers have nectar using echolocation. After an initial bat visit during which nectar is removed, the petals are arranged in a different manner (altering the shape of the flower). As a result, the unique "echo fingerprint" of petal arrangement informs the bat whether nectar is present or absent.

Florida Giant Mulberry - produces long narrow fruit, about 2 inches long, light purple in color. Flesh is sweet with just right balance of sweet and sour. Vigorous tree, often grows 6-10 ft per year. Morus alba x rubra Illinois Everbearing. This tree is hardy to -20F, which makes it one of the most widely adapted of all mulberries. It sometimes starts producing the first year after planting! It becomes a large shade tree very quickly, growing 3-5ft per year in favorable conditions, the tree reaching 20-30 ft.
It bears an abundance of sweet, dark, highly-flavored fruit, 1-1/2 inches long that look like elongated blackberries, and have a delicious and distinctive sweet taste. The berries start to ripen a little later than some other cultivars, and ripen continuously throughout July, August, and into September, hence the Everbearing name.

Rare and hard-to-find, this dwarf mulberry performs admirably as a container plant. The fruit is larger than dwarf mulberry and the plant flowers and fruits most of the year in repeating cycles. When grown as a container plant, its plump sweet fruit is easily picked and is also easily protected from birds with lightweight netting. It is hardy as a garden plant in zones 5-9. When grown outdoors, it is deciduous. When grown inside, it will hold its leaves and continue to flower and fruit as long as the light level is high enough.
