| Lagunaria patersonia, Hibiscus patersonia, Laguna squamea Family: Malvaceae Primrose Tree, Cow Itch Tree Origin: Australia ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Small evergreen tree, olive green, entire, oval leaves, 2 to 4 inches long, with grayish tomentose undersides. Profuse pale pink to almost purplish flowers that appear in the leaf axils during summer look like small hibiscuses about 2 in across, with 5 reflexed petals surrounding a central column of stamens. The seed pods contain bright orange seeds among irritant bristles. Little water once established, tolerates drought, tolerates salt spray, needs good drainage. The tree has a beautiful, rounded canopy. Due to its tolerance of salt spray, salty irrigation and wind, it is a perfect oceanside plant. Flowers in spring. Zones 10-11. |
