Alpinia vittata, Alpinia albolineata, Alpinia sanderae, Alpinia tricolor Family: Zingiberaceae Striped Narrow Leaf Ginger, Variegated Ginger Origin: New Guinea ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alpinia sanderae: this is a horticultural name, never recognized by the botanists. Its botanical name is Alpinia vittata W. Bull. "Alpinia sanderae" was described as a "new" species by Henry Sander in 1903. But it is now considered to be identical with Alpinia vittata. Henry Sander (1847-1920) abused this species. He had the gall to name one specimen after himself (Alpinia sanderae). Then, on the same page of the Garden Chronicle he named another specimen Alpinia tricolor. Reminds me of the tactics that some assistant professors employ in a futile attempt at obtaining tenure. But this may not have been the case 97 years ago. Then, 34 years later, Henry Ridley made a brave attempt at persuading us that they were both Guillainia vittata. But the name Guillainia, first used by Vieillard in 1866 for Guillainia purpurata, had long been abandoned. We know that species as the luxuriant Alpinia purpurata. To complete the story, Alpinia vittata was the original name for the plant, and that name is still the correct name. Alpinia vittata - seldow blooms in cultivation, variegated leaves, root hardy to zone 9B. The foliage is outstanding. Must be greenhoused in Zone 9 except in very warmest winters. Has pink inflorescence with pink flowers. Grows to 5ft in medium sun. |
