Mucuna benettii, Mucuna bennettii, Mucuna albertisii, Mucuna novoguineensis
Family: Faboideae / Leguminosae / Papilionaceae
Red Jade Vine, New Guinea Creeper
Origin: New Guinea
vine or creeperfull sunmoderate waterred/crimson/vinous flowersattracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Amazing long cascading clusters of brilliant red flowers chained together to form a 3' to 4' long raceme of splendour. It's much rarer than its distant cousin (blue/green jade vine) but is very popular in gardens that accommodate this vine. Origin is New Guinea but flourishes in tropical to semi tropical regions as well. A must for the serious collector! Roots must be in shade. A very large, woody climber. Vivid scarlet or flame colored, in a long inflorence. Can be used to climb a large tree or a very large pergola. A magnificent vine, one you will never forget once you have seen it! Just remember, it does need room to spread.

More cold hardy than Green Jade Vine (Strongylodon).

4416 Camptosema grandiflora - Dwarf Red Jade Vine
Dwarf Red Jade vine. Cuitelo, Crista-De-Galo (Rooster's Crest). Sometimes miss-identified as a Mucuna species. Close related to Mucuna benetti, Red Jade Vine. Spectacular vine from Brazil with long pendulous chains of fiery orange-red flowers. Heavy vine, needs a large support. An arbor is ideal so that the brilliant flowering racemes can hang down from the ceiling. Blooms in fall and winter. Prune heavily in spring after flowering. Give full or partial sun with adequate moisture and fertilizer. It is said that it can tolerate some drought and light frost. However, its hardiness range is not yet known, probably USDA zones 9b - 11. It is still much hardier than ultra-tropical Mucuna benettii.
