Native to South Africa, the Cotyledon orbiculata is a small shrub that grows up to 2-5 ft tall. Highly ornamental, its foliage consist of wide and fleshy green leaves that have a unique shape, often resembling a pig's ear, hence the common name.

Under the right conditions, this small shrub also produces large, eye-catching blossoms that can be of varied shades of red and crimson as well as vinous. These vibrant and intense colors attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the Cotyledon plants.

Cotyledon, being a diverse genus, has a wide range of temperature requirements. In USDA zones 9-11, these small shrubs can prove to be a very good choice for gardening. They require full sun and moderate water, planted in well-drained soil. In colder regions, they can be grown in containers and kept indoors during winter months. In such cases, keep the soil just damp.

The Cotyledon orbiculata is an easy care and low maintenance shrub and is ideal for small landscape areas, or for adding an interesting, sculptural touch to the rock or herb garden. With a moderate yet regular watering regime and good drainage, these lovely plants can brighten up any corner of your garden, providing you with a gorgeous display of vibrant flower colors to enjoy.
