Leaves are thick and leathery and somewhat bent back, dark green and lustrous above while lighter and dull below. Fragrant, white or pink flowers in wide clusters are followed by blue-black fruits which tend to be hidden among the leaves. These provide food for some birds. Likes moist, well drained, slightly acidic soils and withstands drought once established. Quite salt tolerant and tough. Propagation: Is by seeds and cuttings.
