It is a drought resistant tree grown for its abundant late summer flowers and papery, lantern-like fruit. Golden rain tree is a small, open-branching, irregularly shaped, deciduous tree with a rounded crown, which typically grows 7"-9" tall and as wide. Leaves emerge pinkish bronze to purplish in spring, mature to a bright green in summer and turn yellow (quality variable) in fall. Bright yellow flowers appear in early summer in long terminal panicles. Falling blossoms may or may not resemble "golden rain", but the fallen blossoms often form an attractive golden carpet under the tree. Flowers give way to interesting, brown, papery seed capsules which somewhat resemble Chinese lanterns. Known as Luan in China, its flowers are used both as a yellow dye and in traditional medicine, and the tree is planted over the graves of scholars. The inflated capsular fruit are wind blown, ultimately shattering to disseminate the seeds. Naturalized in many places because of its capacity for long-distance dispersal. Fruits are edible Blooming time of Koelreuteria paniculata is May – July. The Koelreuteria paniculata can tolerate semi-shade or full sun conditions. Easily grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils. Tolerates moderate wind, drought and many city air pollutants. Dry to medium moisture. Growth rate is low. During the early years, it is best to stake the tree to ensure a straight trunk. It also tolerates some salt spray but requires well-drained soil. It would be hard to find a more adaptive yellow flowering tree for urban planting. It makes a nice patio tree, creating light shade but its brittle wood can break easily in windy weather. Koelreuteria paniculata has no serious insect or disease problems.
