| Meconopsis sp. Family: Papaveraceae Blue Poppy Origin: Himalayas, Burma, China ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The genus Meconopsis comprises some 45 species of annuals, biennials and deciduous or evergreen biennials, and often short-lived or monocarpic perennials. They are found in nature in moist shady mountainous regions, alpine meadows, screes, and rocky slopes. The Himalayan Blue Poppy is probably the most frequently grown species. Spectacular, saucer shaped, bright blue flowers with golden centres in early summer above rosettes of toothed, hairy, bluish green leaves. Himalayan Blue Poppy looks lovely growing in a shady woodland setting. It is short-lived perennial and unless planted in moist soil can die after flowering, though it usually does produce several crowns around the parent plant which will bloom the following year. |
