This hardy deciduous shrub or small tree is native to China and its hybrids can reach 5-10 ft tall and 10-20 ft wide. It can usually be seen growing in full sun or partial shade requiring regular watering, but light to moderate watering will suffice as well. Established plants are moderately cold hardy to areas experiencing temperatures in the 30s F.

The flowers open pure white and change color over a three-day period until they are deep pink and then as they die assume a dark "blue-pink" hue. The most notable characteristic of this flowering shrub is that flowers of three distinct colors appear on the bush simultaneously as the blooms color cycle independent of one another. Single and double flowered varieties are available, both having quite large blossoms that are up to 5 in across.

Hibiscus mutabilis is fairly easy to grow in many soil types, in pots and containers, or in a well-drained garden bed in sunny areas with access to regular to moderate water. It is suitable for USDA Zone 9-11, though it can sometimes tolerate the cold of an 8 and the heat of a 12. When potted, it should receive regular watering, though the frequency will depend on the type of soil used and the temperature and humidity of the environment. If kept in colder regions, extra care should be taken with potted plants, either by bringing them indoors or ensuring they have proper shelter from frost and extreme cold. Also, mulching around a potted Confederate Rose can help protect the roots and keep them at a steadier temperature for a longer time.
