Connections between Plants and the Planets... What is your lucky plant?
Since early in the history, man observed the cycles that plants have when they grow according to their seasons. Astrology and botany are complementary to nature. The myths surrounding the plants, their medicinal properties given from Mother Nature, unseen cycles that connect many different factors in our world gave ideas to some astrology concepts such as: Druid Horoscope, Celtic Tree Calendar, Indian Vedic Systems Jyotish Shastra (Vastu Shastra), Ayurvedic studies, and many others. They all have similar idea of a connection between time of year, plant growth, and the cycles of the stars in the sky: the zodiac. Plants seen from an astrological perspective show us how zodiac signs and plants are connected. From this perspective, people, plants, planets and constellations are made of the same “elements” (fire, earth, air and water) and energies (hot/dry, hot/moist, cold/dry, cold/moist). This commonality facilitates people's connection with nature and the Universe.
Astrology and plants are associated with each other. Trees and vegetation not only protect the environment but are also capable of affecting human life by subsiding the ill effects of the environment. In this way plants play an important role in the planetary remedies. Trees and vegetation have the ability to change the condition of planets in human life. Vegetation planting and maintenance provide environmental protection as well, health, happiness and prosperity. There are several remedies in vedic astrology to pacify the ill-effects of afflicted planets placed in a "kundali". Some of them include, for example, planting a Banyan tree on a highway that gives relief from markeyesha Saturn and longevity; or if Jupiter is weak or forms Alpayu yoga in association with any other planet then a Peepal tree can be planted to get good results. Similarly, medicinal plants/herbs are also used in astrology to get relief from inauspicious results of malefic planets.
Use of plants for medicinal purposes was linked to astrology by many early herbalists. Paracelsus - a Swiss-German Renaissance physician, botanist, alchemist, and astrologer declared that a physician should be predestinated to the cure of his patient and the horoscope should be inspected, with the plants gathered at the critical moment.
Astrology deals with the interpretation of an individual's natal chart. The astrological chart is built from the Earth's two distinct movements:
- its rotation around the Sun, which results in the cycle of the seasons and the length of daytime throughout the year
- its rotation around its own axis, which rules the alternation of day and night.
Trees are worshipped like Gods in Indian culture. It is a general belief that there are representative trees for every zodiac sign under whose protection the subject is blessed with favourable fruits or flowers. Each of the 12 signs can benefit from the properties of certain plants, which help to heal, grow, balance, and inspire. According to Astrological studies there are plants related to a Zodiac Sign called Zodiac Plants. People wear gems to bring Good Luck. Similarly plants/trees can also bring good luck, prosperity and happiness. A Zodiac plant related to your Zodiac sign is said to bring good fortune and luck in your life.
Indian Vedic System of Astrology Jyotish Shastra mentions trees that correspond 12 Zodiac signs (Rasi, or Raasi). According to this belief, positive energies come to one who plants his/her Rasi plant which will bring this person good luck and prosperity.
Examples of trees associated with different Raasis:
Aries (Mesh) - Red Sandalwood (Adenanthera pavonina)
Taurus (vrishabh) - Sapthaparni (Alstonia scholaris), Papaya
Gemini (Mithun) - Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), Aloe vera
Cancer (Kark) - Palas (Butea monosperma), and plants bearing white flowers
Leo (Singh) - Kaligottu (Stereospermum chelonoides)
Virgo (Kanya) - Mango, Aloe vera
Libra (Tula) - Bakul (Mimusops elengi), and plants bearing white flowers
Scorpio (Vrishchik) - Khair (Acacia catechu)
Sagittarius (Dhanasu) - Peepal (Ficus religiosa), Banana, Mango
Capricorn (Makar) - Neem Tree
Aquarius (Kumbh) - Jacaranda, Sheesham Tree (Dalbergia)
Pisces (Meen) - Banyan (Ficus bengalensis), Banana, Mango
Every person born under a particular zodiac sign has particular plants, herbs and spices that resonate clearly with their sign. Keep in mind that plants of signs other than your own, still offer you that special healing effect thanks to their planet influence. Moreover, two plants of two neighboring signs create so-called Zodiac Effect of Vegetative Synergy (ZEVS): their healing properties enhance each other. According to recent studies of International University of Astrology, ZEVS index becomes especially powerful for persons born at a borderline between two signs: for example, those who are born on April 19 and 20th - on contact between Aries and Taurus ruling. For them, plants from these two neighboring signs, Aries and Taurus, planted in close proximity will double their positive influence on person's life, health and prosperity. So, Jasmine planted under a Maple tree will bring both Aries and Taurus double luck and positive energy input.
By learning about plants of different signs of Zodiac, you can start using particular plants in your edible landscape and environment, utilize their powerful properties for yourself, strengthen your energetic field and connect more fully with yourself. It’s also nice to care for the plants that care for you!
You can keep some smaller plants inside your house until they grow bigger and require more room. Not only will they empower you, they also smell great and help keep your house or office fresh.
Out in the yard, you may design a circular Astrological Garden divided into twelve sections, or houses, in which you might grow one or more of the plants and/or herbs that correspond to each sign. This magic combination of all 12 zodiac plants (or plant collections) may become a powerful tool of your connection with the stars, and the Universe. You could make a special symbol designating the section that corresponds to your own sign, such as a large flat rock, painted with your astrological sign. This symbol will honor plants in your Astrological Garden that share your personal zodiac.
If you want to fill your life with positive energy, happiness and prosperity plant a tree, shrub or vine according to your zodiac sign. They can remove obstacles from your life. Look up your sign and thrive by filling your home and garden with these brilliant gifts from Mother Nature. Moreover, if you know the birth dates of your friends/relatives, a potted plant matching the recipient's zodiacal sign makes a unique and special gift!

We are working on complete catalog of zodiac plants. Our consultant Ashok, a yoga monk from India, is working on Ayurvedic manuscript, and is helping us with reference on all tropical plants. It may take a while as we have to go from local ethnic names to correct scientific names. We will be posting Zodiac plant list every month, for corresponding Zodiac sign.

Scorpio's plants are often found in remote places or on poor ground. They will likely have thorns, can be red in color, and grow under adversity. The good news is, most of these plants are nearly indestructible! This makes them desirable for every gardener.
The reproductive organs are ruled by Scorpio, so these are plants that balance the hormones, regulate the menstrual cycle, help with childbirth and pregnancy. Until this century, Scorpio was ruled by Mars, and the herbs associated with it had to do with the urogenital system and the colon. Many of the herbs related to Scorpio are cleansing and revitalizing. Now, astrologers assign Scorpio to Pluto, discovered in 1930 (Pluto is said by astrologers to be a “higher octave” of Mars). Physiologically, Scorpio involves the processes of catabolism and anabolism, the death and regeneration of body cells. Diseases of Scorpio are often involved with the slow buildup of toxic substances in the body (carcinogens, etc) or in the mind (anger, jealousy). Scorpio loves a spice with depth and complexity. Camphor Basil adds rich flavor to every dish it seasons, and its own aphrodisiac tendencies appeal to Scorpio's lusty nature.

The best plants for Sagittarius will support the body’s largest glandular organ, the liver. The planet Jupiter also rules the hips, thighs, lower spine, and the autonomic nervous system, as well as the process of growth and preservation. Herbs related to Jupiter have traditionally been used to treat lower back problems (including sciatica and lumbago), arthritis, and rheumatism. Herbs with a high silica content are related to Sagittarius (they promote a positive frame of mind), as are plants with large taproots and trees that produce fruit and nuts. Illnesses of Jupiter are said to arise from immoderate consumption. Basil is an herb that's both expansive and cheerful - just like Sagittarius - and its reputation as a money attractor resonates with this sign's generous nature as well. Use this happy herb when you want to infuse your life with fun and prosperity!

An EARTH sign ruled by the planet Saturn.
Capricorn's plants usually have few flowers, or small flowers, are knobby or woody, and may have an unpleasant smell or taste. Saturn rules plants with long lives and slow growth, so plants with annual rings are also associated with the Goat.
Physiologically, Saturn rules the systems that give the body its structure and form: the skeletal system, and the skin, teeth, joints, and knees, so plants that are high in calcium can be very beneficial. Those can be woody plants and shrubs that show annual rings, as well as some poisonous or narcotic plants. Saturn plants are useful in treating arthritis and rheumatism. Traditional Capricorn appreciates a spice that is powerful but familiar. Black pepper adds flavor and a bit of heat to both food and life, creating movement without too much change.

The water-bearer's plants will often grow in unusual places and may vary in appearance. They often have purple or blue flowers, or may have unusual colors.
The most healing and beneficial plants for Aquarius are the ones that help circulation, relax the nervous system, or promote inspiration. When Uranus was discovered, it replaced Mercury as ruler of Aquarius. Physiologically, Uranus rules the bioelectrical impulses that power the body’s nervous system (nervous tension and nervous exhaustion brought on by powerful changes in the environment are related to both Mercury and Uranus). Physically, Aquarius rules the lower legs, the calves, and the ankles, and the electrical impulses that travel through the body’s nervous system. The nervous system itself is ruled by Mercury, and Uranus is said to be a "higher octave" of Mercury. Since Uranus was discovered after the correspondences with plants had been established, the herbs used in Aquarius are Mercury herbs. Always difficult to pinpoint, quirky Aquarius appreciates the unusual and complex flavor of star anise. Use this star-shaped spice when you wish to bring happy surprises into your life.

As a WATER sign ruled by both Jupiter and Moon (and Neptune, that was not discovered until 1846, after the plant correspondences were established; Neptune is considered a "higher octave" of the Moon), Pisces plants are often large but hard to find, and may grow near the ocean. The most healing plants for Pisces are those that strengthen the immune system or have an antibacterial effect. Pisces plants may also catalyze expanded states of awareness and be helpful in dream work.
Herbs connected to Pisces are ruled by its former ruler, the Moon (Neptune, the current ruler, was not discovered until 1846, after the plant correspondences were established; Neptune is considered a “higher octave” of the Moon). Diseases of Pisces have traditionally included psychotic disorders, various forms of substance addiction, lung diseases such as tuberculosis, and ailments of the foot; contemporary herbalists also add immune system diseases. Pisces is strengthened by rosemary's ability to promote an aura of centered grounding. This protective herb helps strengthen boundaries and cultivate a closer connection to the physical realm.

PEEPAL TREE (Ficus religiosa) – Research shows evidence that oxygen is produced in large amounts by the leaves of this tree and it is found in high concentration under the branches, probably due to the thick foliage. Hence, it is considered very healthy to stroll around and near this tree in the mornings. For this reason, it is considered a sacred tree and is worshiped in India. It is usually found near temples or temples are also constructed near these trees. It has a very long life and can survive for centuries. However, it is not suitable near a house, since it has far spreading roots which can affect the foundation of the building.
NEEM TREE (Azadirachta indica) - This tree has great medicinal value and its extract is used in pesticides. Its twigs can also be used to brush one’s teeth and neem oil is used in physiotherapy. Since neem leaves are very bitter, a mixture of neem leaves, tender green mango and jaggery is eaten on New Year in South India as a symbolic gesture gearing up to face the sweet, sour and bitter experiences of the coming. Therefore, this is a good tree to have in a house garden.
MANGO TREE (Mangifera indica) – Most parts of the mango tree have medicinal value. Its leaves are used in religious rituals.
