HERBACEOUS PERENNIALS, GROUNDCOVERS, & SMALL SHRUBS

An exceptionally distinct pepper, it is likely an ancient hybrid of Capsicum annuum (bird pepper) and Capsicum chinense (habanero group).
While of small size (something around an inch or so long), these oddly shaped bright orange to finally red fruits are prolifically produced along the branches of compact plants with small leaves.
What separates this variety from others is its unique flavor which packs quite a bang! Not because of its heat (because our strain has either no heat what-so-ever, or so little it is hard to even detect), but because of its intense fruity habanero flavor.

Wiri Wiri Pepper. A variety from Guyana, the Wiri Wiri pepper is the illustrious gem; hard sought and rarely found. This plant produces good yields of small 1/2" berry shaped hot peppers. Peppers grow upright, are very hot, and turn from green, to orange, to red when mature.
What makes it so much different than any other hot pepper grown in the garden or bought at the store?

Cordyline fruticosa Sherbert is a vibrant tropical plant, also known as the Ti Plant, prized for its sword-like leaves featuring streaks of green, pink, magenta, and cream, adding bright color indoors or outdoors, and offering air-purifying qualities and good luck symbolism. Cordyline terminalis 'Show Girl' (Singapore Twist), New Guinea Fan Ti Leaf. An unusual form with a head that grows in a flat fan that actually twists as it grows! It has olive green foliage with reddish bases, very compact internodes, the foliage heads 30" across. This is a great conversation piece for the garden or patio. The leaves form an elegant fan as it grows. This plant appreciates well draining soil, and accepts a wide variety of lighting conditions from bright light to complete shade. The color is much more intense in good light.

The name refers to the colorful raspberry colored stem, but that's not the only colorful thing about this Spiraling Ginger. The leaves are dark green, long and glossy with velvety deep purple undersides. The inflorescence is a vivid red with tight bracts and bold yellow flowers. The butterflies love to drink the nectar from the flowers. This is a large vigorous ginger, growing up to 5-6 ft tall.

This plant produces an excellent cut flower last up to about 14 days. If placed in a slightly shaded position, flower on the plant can remain for up to 3 months.

Peacock Fern is a rare collectible, valued for its habit of producing bulbils along its fronds which then develop into cute young plants right on the stem! Lush, green fern that thrives in the moist, shaded understory of forests. The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food.

Epidendrum is a diverse neotropical genus that has flowers characterized by a frilly or fringed lip. This feature is occasionally diagnostic to distinguish between species. These orchids are widely cultivated and may be hybridized with Sophronitis, another South American genus. The flowers are usually small and delicately colored, and borne on a dense inflorescence. Many species have a fragrance.

Bolivian Sunset Gloxinia. Excellent houseplant or ground cover. The density of the foliage and flowers makes a spectacular show. Excellent houseplant; even when not in bloom the attractive foliage is evergreen and attractive all seasons. Grown outdoors in dappled shade with plenty of water, the density of the foliage and flowers makes a spectacular show. May die down in the spring, then comes back during the rainy season. This is a great fall to early winter flowering perennial. It spreads rapidly from rhizomes and forms a dense ground cover. You can give flowering starts of it from your garden as Christmas presents.

This Thailand species has a lovely light fragrance with a strong and vigorous growth habit similar to Hoya carnosa. The umbel of flowers is about 3" wide and boasts tiny maroon stars with white frosted edges. The leaves are dark green with silver white flecks and darker accented green veining. It's a strong grower that likes to ramble so provide support with a trellis or stake to help manage its wandering ways.

This rare plant originates from Papua New Guinea and was first described in 1913. The flower is very fragrant and can infuse your entire house in a beautiful lilac scent. This vigorous grower makes a perfect houseplant with velvety leaves and fragrant white flowers sporting red centers. Each flower is almost 1" wide and they are borne in clusters that appear when the day length shortens in fall and winter. It can be grown in a pot with a trellis or in a hanging basket. The sweet scent of the flowers fills the air when Hoya calycina is in bloom.

Purrple Haze, Ribbon Bush. Purples and blues are colors that can be hard to obtain in the southern garden. Showy lavender flowers cover this plant abundantly, blooming from fall through winter, and then on and off during the rest of the year. The flowers have two lips; the upper lip is darker purple with white markings. Leaves are tough, succulent-like to touch, but wide and green. The plant looks very ornamental. Water occasionally. Great butterfly attractor! Does not require much watering, good border plant.

Pink Jacobinia, Pink Brazilian Plume Flower. Spectacular pink flowers from late spring to fall. Butterfly and hummingbird attractor. The plant is relatively cold hardy to light freeze and grows back from roots even if leaves are damaged.

Fruit cocktail shrimp plant, golden lime colored bracts accented by bright red flowers crown. Very cold hardy tropical, like many of Acantheceae plants. It survived in our garden two nights of 25F hard freeze with no protection and no damage.

Miniature Orange Jasmine. This dwarf variety of murraya stays compact. The shrub gets bushy but stays short 1-2ft tall. Very fragrant flowers year round followed by red fruit. Good for potting culture and as a house plant. This plant is very interesting. The seedlings start blooming in small 1-2" size, when they have only 3-4 leaves! It needs lots of direct sun, likes to be somewhat on a dry side. Do not push it with fertilizer. It is VERY slow-growing. In 2 years it may grow as little as 1 ft tall, this is why it is called Mini. But the good thing is it starts blooming in few weeks to 1-2 months after germination!

Nepenthes Miranda is a very large, robust growing carnivorous tropical pitcher plant. Its large, speckled pitchers can be over 18" with wide mouths the size of coffee cups when fully mature. This plant definitely has hybrid vigor! It grows relatively quickly and produces large, colorful pitchers. In bright sunlight, leaves turn maroon. Give this plant lots of space!

Brazilian candles. One of our most interesting shrubs. A vertical grower with green leaves and unusual dark pink and purple upright flowers with blue stamens that look like they are not fully opened. Flowers cover the whole plant sometimes. This plant excudes on stems and leaves, and after the liquid dries out, it leaves very attractive crystals, shining in the sunlight.

Native to Columbia, the gorgeous and highly sought after Pink Princess philodendron is at the top of many plant collector's wish lists, and for good reason. Characterized by deep green, heart-shaped leaves with bubblegum pink variegation, the pink princess is truly unique in the plant world. While it can be easily confused with the Philodendron pink congo, the variegation of the pink princess is stable as it occurs due to natural processes (whereas the pink congo variegation is a result of chemicals that are injected into the leaves, usually reverting back to green a couple months after being purchased).

Also called Solenostemon amboinicus, Allspice - Cuban Oregano. Excellent fragrant herb that is ideal in mixed containers and patio planters. Leaves are used for cooking as basil. The fresh leaves are used in beef salad in Thailand. A species also is cultivated as a house plant because of its beautiful leaves.
It is often called Course Leaf Thyme. Beautiful, fragrant, strong, medicinal... there is so much good to say about this plant. A popular herb among the West Indies, the beneficial and useful properties go on and on. Have a bad cough? Try a few bold leaves with a cup of tea for a cure. Want the most tender pork of your life? Rhipsalis pilocarpa is an incredibly rare, "hairy-fruited wickerware cactus" from Brazil that's bound to wow any plant lover. Its fuzzy, spidery stems can reach up to 20 inches before branching out, and they're decorated with small, white to peach-colored flowers that release a light, pleasant fragrance. After blooming, it produces pink or red berries covered in fine bristles, adding yet another layer of charm to this extraordinary jungle cactus.
