EXOTIC FRUIT TREES

Grumichama, Brazilian Cherry. This compact tree has beautiful glossy green leaves up to 3-4 inches long and one to two inches wide, with leathery texture, and the new growth is a wine reddish color before it matures. Fruits follow quickly in about four weeks after flowering. They are about one inch or larger, purplish black in color with large seeds and excellent melting flesh that has almost the flavor of a northern cherry. Eaten fresh and used in jelly. The Grumichama makes an excellent container plant and will fruit quite nicely in a five to ten gallon-size container.

Similar to the Cherry Rio Grande (Eugenia aggregata), but with larger fruit (2" fruit) and doesn't have the same problem with die back as the Cherry Rio. Fruit flavor is said to be superior to the Cherry Rio. Heavy producer. Fruits March-April.

Surinam Cherry, Pitanga - vigorous and quick to fruit, often producing the same year or by the next. This plant is a seedling from Black Surinam Cherry Lolita, known for its very sweet, juicy fruit with no aftertaste. The fruit is relatively large at about 1-1.2 inches, starting red and turning deep black when fully ripe. In our garden, these seedlings have come true to seed with black fruit, though some reports suggest they may occasionally produce red fruit as well.
Pitanga is a reliable producer with an upright, freely branching growth habit. It is also quite cold hardy, tolerating short periods of frost. Once established, the plant can handle temperatures in the upper 20s without damage.

Fig Tree - dark fruit Black Mission variety. Introduced in California around 1770 from mission station in Baja. A hardy and easy to grow fruit tree, tolerates freeze. Black color fruit, with amber to strawberry color pulp. Sweet rich flavor, excellent fresh quality. Unlike many other fig varieties first crop (breba crop) is good as well in most growing conditions.
Figs are prized for their delicious fruit, which can be one to three inches in length, violet, brown or black. Most fruits are borne from early summer to late fall on new growth, and the fruits generally mature very quickly. The lovely lobed green leaves make it valuable in the landscape even without its fruit. They are very large, prominently veined and deeply lobed and may be 8 to 10 inches long. The fig makes a splendid patio or indoor plant that grows with little attention, save for constantly moist soil and bright light. Prefers alkaline, well-drained soil, but can tolerate wet conditions. Trees are very sensitive to frost when actively growing, but can withstand 10F when dormant.

LSU Purple fig is a very reliable, prolific producer of early to late delicious figs. One of the best figs to come along for some time. Excellent for containers, producing early figs as soon as growth starts. Very acclimated to the fluctuating weather of the South, does great in Virginia Beach. Zones 7-9. Has fruited well at our nursery (zone 7). Best to pick a few days after fruit turns black, wrinkles and elongates.

Governors plum, Madagascar Plum, Batoko palm - is a tropical or subtropical small shrubby tree. It is cultivated in tropical regions as a hedge plant and for its deep red acid fruits resembling small plums. The fruits are about one inch wide and can be eaten fresh or made into preserves. They are sweet and sour, with a texture and flavor similar to a plum. Fruits mature after one to two months from flowering.
The tree is easy to grow, self-fertile and doesn't require much care, not fussy about soil and very forgiving if you forget to water it.
Seeds germinate readily, but it takes a while until the seedling is ready to be transplanted into a big pot or in the ground, a few months.

The tree is a compact, evergreen gem with glossy green leaves that look great year-round. Its small, bright yellow-orange fruits are about the size of a golf ball, with translucent white pulp inside. The taste? A refreshing burst of sweet and sour - like a lemony tropical candy!
These little fruits are not only great for snacking fresh but also make awesome juices, jams, or desserts. Plus, the tree is pretty low-maintenance - just give it some sun and water, and it's happy.

Achacha, Achachairu. Small, prolifically-fruiting tree related to the Mangosteen. The taste is described as both bitter and sweet and is somewhat reminiscent of lemonade. The rather tough, bitter rind can be split open with a knife or with the teeth, and the edible part of the fruit sucked off the seed. The Achacha is in season from December to mid-March.
The small tree with a pyramidal canopy is prolifically-fruiting. It grows in the southern part of the Amazon basin in the central area of Bolivia. Achachas are tangy and refreshing with a delicate subtle sweetness, a fine balance between sweetness and acidity, producing an unusual taste sensation. Fruit should be picked mature as it does not ripen further on storage. In addition to having a great flavor, Achacha fruit has more flesh relative to its weight, when compared to the renowned purple mangosteen. Its rind is also palatable and easily utilized for beverages. The Bolivian name of the fruit is Achachairu and translated means honey kiss in Guarani language. Nutritionally, Achachas are valuable source of vitamin C and folate, as well as potassium, riboflaving and antioxidants.
Easy to grow in south Florida and must have for every tropical fruit lover. Grows well in a container.

Imbe, Lowveld Mangosteen. An evergreen slow growing small tree with interesting branching pattern, oddly shaped growth habit. The fruits are produced in profusion and are edible, having a refreshing acid-sweet flesh. In Mozambique the fruit is used to prepare a pleasant alcoholic beverage.

Mangosteen. This delicious fruit has a thick, dark-red skin, inside which are creamy white segments with a sweet, slightly tart flavor. Purported by many who have had the luxury of tasting it as being the best tasting fruit in the world.

Tropical Barbie Pink. Considered by many to be one of the best guavas for the home garden. This highly productive cultivar produces pear-shaped, yellow skinned guavas with thick, pink flesh. Lower in pectin than other varieties, this variety is superior for eating out-of-hand or processing into juice. In spite of its common name, the tree is cold hardy for a tropical fruit. Very reliable, heavy producer. Will fruit in container.
Ruby Supreme and Barbie Pink guava are very similar, but Barbie pink is much larger and not as dark of a pink color.

Costa Rican Guava, Cas Guava is native to Central America and known for its intensely sour taste, which makes it perfect for flavorful juices and beverages rather than eating fresh.
Cas Guava fruit is used in traditional Costa Rican drink "Agua de Cas," a refreshing blend of cas juice, water, and sugar.
Cas Guava fruit is packed with vitamin C: about four times more vitamin C than a typical orange, making it an excellent immune booster. It's also rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and reduce inflammation.

This is a very small version of the favorite aromatic Guava - Nana. It grows only up to 5-6 ft tall with a short trunk and branching, bushy habit. Perfect for those who have limited space. It can be grown in a pot and fruits heavily. Providing warm conditions, the tree can bear fruit almost year around. The fruit is round, about 2", pretty good size for a dwarf tree. The flesh is sweet, aromatic, and varies from white to yellow to pink.
The leaves can be either smaller or regular size, in both cases the tree has a dwarf habit.

Egyptian White Guava, rare exciting variety. The fruit is large, has soft white flesh with honey flavor. The fruit is disease resistant which is great for humid climates like Florida. Stores well, for a week or two after harvesting.
Guava is a good tropical fruit tree not fussy on the soil quality, and produces fruit year after year. It is relatively cold hardy. Requires regular watering. Great container plant, will fruit in a pot in small size.

Sweet variety of Strawberry Guava "Pineapple" from Hawaii. Similar to cattley red guava, produces yellow fruit, which are much sweeter than red fruit and have citrusy flavor. Fast growing, fruits easily in container, cold hardy, tolerates alkaline and poor soils.

The Hong Kong Guava which was created in Hawaii from a seed grown guava in Hong Kong, features a large, round fruit which can get between 6 to 8 ounces in weight. The fruit has a smooth pink exterior, with a sweet flavor, and very few seeds inside. This particular guava variety is very tolerant to most soil types and climate conditions but must be protected from freezing temperatures. The Hong Kong Guava tree is high yielding and spreads outwards in growth habit.

Rare variety of Tropical Guava from Indonesia. Round fruit with white flesh.

This is a Guava hybrid with Araca Pera, a rare flavorful wild guava from the Brazilian Amazon which is rare in cultivation.
These fruit are 1.5-2", with an acidic, sour guava-like flavor. Its juice is concentrated and must be diluted and sweetened to produce a delicious drink. The fruit is processed into ice cream sorbet, gelatins and candies. It is the major source of a special Guava Wine production. A great container specimen.

Gynura crepidioides commonly known as Okinawa Spinach, it is native to Indonesia. Okinawa Spinach is commercially grown in China as a green, it is not a true spinach. Both the stems and the leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. The top of the leaves are dark green and the undersides are purple. Okinawa Spinach has an unique flavor with a faint hint of pine, and will add a beautiful aesthetic element to cuisine. This green is also known as cholesterol spinach, and there are many claims that it lowers can cholesterol. This plant will thrive in pretty much any type of soil from clay to silt to sandy soils. It does well in any type of light other than full shade, but will grow best in full sun to partial shade. Okinawa Spinach is not a heavy feeder, and is relatively pest-free. It is good to cut back flowering branches to promote new shoot growth, because the shoots and leaves are what are harvested. Okinawan spinach is very adaptable to container gardening and even grows well on a windowsill. The younger leaves will have a much better flavor than the older leaves. The leaves and young shoot tips can be steamed, used in stir fry, tempura, stews, and soups. Just add them at the very end.
