ORNAMENTAL TREES

The seeds of the Carob Tree, all being the same size, are used as weights in eastern Mediterranean countries (the word "carat" comes from the Arabic name of the seeds). So the modern word carat owes its derivation to the same pathway that named the Carob, which was originally used by Arab jewelers to weigh their precious metals and stones!
Carob is cultivated for its abundance of pods, rich in sugar when ripe, which are used for the production of alcohol or ground with the seeds to make carob bean meal for animal feed.

This is a rare understory palm from Vanuatu (Tanna and Anatom islands) where it grows in the underwood of the humid forests, mainly along the coasts. The Snakeskin palm in habitat grows to about twenty feet tall, but much smaller in cultivation, with a trunk a foot and a half in diameter and when young is very difficult to distinguish from the Caryota zebrina. The leaves of C. ophiopelis are less glossy, a lighter green and thinner or finer, the leaflets less diamond shaped than Zebrina and mature trees would be much smaller than Zebrina. It will tolerate no cold, needs filtered light or shade, rich soil and ample water.
Caryota ophiopellis is a monoecious, monocarpic species (it does fructify only once then dies). Quite rare in cultivation, it arouses an increasing interest due to the unusual and showy coloration, in particular in the young plants. It requires a tropical or humid subtropical climate, a shady position during the young stage, slightly shaded when adult, and draining soils, slightly acidic to neutral, maintained humid. The starch contained in the stem, extracted with a special procedure and cooked to prepare a sort of bread, is still now utilized by the local populations.

This is a medium to large tree with ovate, pointed leaflets; when these drop, usually in the dry season, masses of bright gold flower clusters appear on almost every branch. Seagrape. Popular plant used as an ornamental in gardens or indoors, subjected to salty winds and drought. It has stiff, rounded platter-like leaves shading from yellowish to olive green with prominent veins. Long clusters of berry-like fruit which follow are striking and give the tree its popular name. Somewhat acid in taste, the fruit can be used to make jelly. Very easy to grow and undemanding plant.

Colvilles glory. Specimen tree with very conspicuous cylindrical or cone shaped clusters of bright orange flowers that are bright red in bud.

Cordia boissieri - White Geiger tree, Texas Olive, Anacahuita. Very popular small trees adorned through much of the spring and summer with large clusters of showy white flowers. Requires ample water to become established, after which it is generally considered quite water efficient. These plants don't like to be grown in pots, in spite of their small size, and usually don't look very happy in containers; however once planted in the ground,they grow faster and start thriving. Cold tolerant plant, takes some freeze.

Cordia sebestena - Scarlet (Orange) Geiger tree. Showy small tree with bright scarlet flowers followed by white edible fruit. According to the legend, the tree was named in memory of John Geiger a Key West 19th century pilot and wrecker. Flowers appear scattered over the tree, most of warm season. Popular landscape tree, however it is cold sensitive and won't tolerate any frost; other than that, it is easy to grow and undemanding.

Cannon ball Tree. Rare tree with a bizarre fruit that can be seen only in tropical botanic gardens and a few larger private gardens. It is a very tall tree which sheds its large, elliptical leaves several times a year. The pinkish-red flowers grow directly from the trunk near the base of the crown and are strongly scented in the evening. Blooms year round. Flowers are followed by large, globular fruit, reddish-brown in color, which do indeed resemble cannonballs and remain on the tree for many months. On older trees there may be dozens of fruits and flower clusters at the same time.

Australian Tree fern - one of the most tropical looking plants. Adds "Hawaii" spirit to your garden. It puts on growth very quickly. The fronds typically will reach about 8' long on a mature specimen, but, as with most tree ferns, they will be significantly stunted if kept in a pot. It will grow well in dappled (but not deep) shade, but also does well in some sun, even in hot climates, as long as the moisture supply is adequate. Bo-Tree, Sacred Ficus. This large deciduous tree is sacred to the Hindus and Buddhists, under which Budda received enlightenment. This fast growing tree usually begins as an epiphytem (air plant, grows on trees) but develops roots to support its height of ninety plus feet. The Bo-Tree has purple figs and is different from other species, because of its slender, long leaf tip. Can be grown as bonsai.

White Fig. Ficus virens found in India, southeast Asia, through Malaysia and into Northern Australia. It is locally known as Pilkhan or Manbornde. Like many figs, fruit are edible. This is a very massive tree in which the size of the crown can sometimes exceed the height of the tree. However, it will take many years and generations to grow to that size... It makes a great bonsai as most of the fig trees.
One of the most famous specimens of this tree is the Curtain Fig Tree of the Atherton Tableland, near Cairns, a popular tourist attraction.

Japanese Fern Tree. Nice shade tree, very dense evergreen crown. Leaves are unusual shape, resembling those of ferns.
