Related to the mangosteen, the Forest Garcinia originated from Pondoland in the Eastern Cape and is very rare even in exclusive collections. It is difficult to propagate. It has fragrant flowers in early summer, decorative orange fruits in winter, glossy foliage with attractive pale green new growth and it is easy to grow. This species is used in traditional medicine.
Evergreen shrub suitable for semi-shade or shade, it is easy to grow, but slow growing, which makes it more manageable and suitable for smaller gardens as well as larger gardens and parks. It also does well in containers. Grow it in a warm spot, in semi-shade or shade, in well-drained, fertile soils, and water well in spring and summer. Garcinia gerrardii is suitable for pot cultivation and with its slow growth, deep green foliage and showy fruits, it would make an interesting substitute for decorative citrus in pots. It is also a good choice for a difficult position in deep shade.

Exotic rare collectible from Guiana. Flowers have well developed tubes, are brightly orange-yellow colored, and pollinated by hummingbirds. Almirajo is a little-known fruit tree native to the humid rainforests of the Choco region in Colombia, an area in the north-west of the country bordering Panama and with a long coastline along the Pacific Ocean.
This rare tropical fruit tree used to be planted as a fruit crop in Colombia and Brazil, but is rarely grown at present. The fruit is yellow outside, oval in shape and very large, up to 10" long and 4" wide and resembles in texture its relative Quararibea cordata. It has cream-colored canistel-like pulp, custard-like to mealy, that allows its tasting with spoon. Mostly eaten fresh out-of-hand. Flavor is sweet, and the fruit is rich of vitamin A. It is highly esteemed in its native Colombia, but is little known elsewhere. Its agreeable sweetness and flavor lying somewhere between banana and apple. The fleshy aril, which completely covers the seeds, is considered a delicacy locally.

Luc's Mexican Achachairu. Lucs Garcinia is really a hit on tropical fruit forums and for a good reason. A great grower in Florida, probably the toughest and hardiest of all the Garcinia (or Rheedia). Seems to prefer light shade, although has been grown in everything from deep shade to full sun. Has handled temperatures in the mid 20s. Trees fruit in 3-6 years from seed.
The fruit is triple the size of Achachairu!
Native to Mexico, Mexican Achachairu or Luc's Garcinia, as it is called, produces bright yellow fruit which are single seeded, typically as large as tennis balls, and have both a better pulp ratio and elegant subacid flavour that is considered superior to that of its much celebrated and close relatives, achacha and mangosteen. Slow growing, attractive tree with a spreading form and large leafed foliage that is waxy and deep emerald green.

Achacha, Achachairu - this is a seedling of Selecto variety developed in Bolivia. Fruit is bigger, rounded shape, almost no nipple, better looking and also higher brix (sweeter fruit). Trees start to fruit in 2-5 years from seed.
Garcinia humilis, known commonly as achachairu or achacha, is a small tree with a pyramidal canopy prolifically-fruiting tree related to the mangosteen. It grows in the southern part of the Amazon basin in the central area of Bolivia. Achachas are tangy and refreshing with a delicate subtle sweetness, a fine balance between sweetness and acidity, producing an unusual taste sensation. Fruit should be picked mature as it does not ripen further on storage. In addition to having a great flavor, Achachairu fruit has more flesh relative to its weight, when compared to the renowned purple mangosteen. Its rind is also palatable and easily utilized for beverages. The Bolivian name of the fruit is Achachairu and translated means honey kiss in Guarani language. Nutritionally, Achachas are valuable source of vitamin C and folate, as well as potassium, riboflaving and antioxidants. Leaves are glossy, darker green on top but lighter underneath, opposite, simple and thick, leathery, and brittle. Flowers are cream or white.
Easy to grow in south Florida and must have for every tropical fruit lover. Grows well in a container.
Express shipping. Will be shipped by Express Mail/UPS Next Day/FedEx Next Day (except Florida, where UPS/FedEx ground takes 1 day). No replacements or refunds on this item, we provide the best packaging. Watch for the delivery, do not keep the package on a sunny porch!

FRESH SEEDS! Cheena is a natural hybrid between jackfruit and chempedak. Comes true from seed.
This highly recommended variety has grown in TopTropicals garden from a seedling of Cheena (Jackfruit x Chempedak) that fruited within 3 years from planting. The fruit (20-25" size) is probably the best we ever tasted! It is super sweet, crunchy and has a rich, pleasant, excellent flavor. It has very little latex which makes it easy to handle when cutting up. The tree produces at the very base of the trunk, so you can prune it as short as you want. Our tree survived light frosts as well as 48 hours of 3ft flooding, with no damage!

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful
