Annona sp. Golden Sugar Apple - seeds

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerant

This rare Annona is a species originally brought to us from Costa Rica. We believe it to be a natural hybrid between A. muricata and A. glabra.
It is a very ornamental, evergreen, small to medium size tree with waxy, large 4-6" leaves, similar to A. muricata, A. montana or Rollinia. Fast growing, forms nice bushy specimen. It has a large, up to 1 lb fruit, green when unripe, turning dark yellow to orange on ripening. The pulp is golden to orange when ripe, with strong Pineapple scent, and resembling Jackfruit in texture. Flavor is like the custard apple but with pineapple, papaya, apricot and melon overtones. Seems to tolerate flooding. It is also cold hardy at least to upper 20's for a few hours. 3 year old trees survived several nights with frost with hardly any leaf damage. The plant would be very interesting for rare fruit collectors as it offers a large, exotic fruit of unusual color and taste, and appears to be much more hardy and water tolerant than similar looking but sensitive A. muricata, A. montana and Rollinia.
Propagation is very easy by seed, which are grayish-yellow to light brown. Seeds germinate readily. Trees start producing quickly. 2-3 years from seed.

The Tuberose grows in elongated spikes up to 45 cm long that produce clusters of fragrant waxy white flowers that bloom from the bottom towards the top of the spike. It has long, bright green leaves clustered at the base of the plant and smaller, clasping leaves along the stem.
Long-lasting as a cut flower in water. Most flowers begin to lose their scent when they are picked. Not so with tuberose, like jasmine, the heady floral scent continues to produce itself. In Ayurvedic medicine, attars are held in high esteem not only for their exquisite fragrance, but their healing properties. Tuberose is known to improve one's capacity for emotional depth.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Wise mango - a very good cultivar that was lost over the years. Wise is from Miami, and was part of the post-1930s boom in mango cultivar introduction in South Florida. Many of those cultivars are no longer propagated even though many had good eating qualities. The Wise mango fruit has almost round shape and very little fiber if any. Sweet, juicy and flavorful.

A Condo variety from Hawaii, fungus resistant and tolerant to high air humidity. It was selected by University of Hawaii in 1970s seedling of Irwin. It has a very compact growth habit. Excellent for containers! It is a heavy producing small tree with excellent fruit quality. The ripe skin is yellow with a red or purple blush. The fruit is oblong shape of 28 oz, the flesh is tangerine orange and firm with a rich sweetness of Indian spice and just a hint of citrus. The season was late in comparison with other varieties and the fruit had exceptional storage and long distance transport characteristics. The fruit matures over a long period, mid-July to October. It has good flavor, excellent disease resistance and good appearance. The tree growth is vigorous but manageable and responded well to annual pruning with consistent, heavy yields and excellent disease tolerance. The Rapoza mango is one of the favorite choices for the small mango industry in Hawaii, because the red color and generous size of the fruit.

Origin: Tropical West Africa. A curious flower! Wild and unusual floral display arrives from late spring to fall on this shrubby vine. Clusters of cream-colored flowers bedecked with long, curly streamers and a rust-tinted throat. Occurring off-and-on throughout the year, flowering is heaviest in spring and summer. The faintly fragrant flowers are short trumpets with five curled petals that are very light pink (aging to creamy light yellow) with a reddish brown base. The tips of the petals become narrowed and elongated, forming a twisting, sticky string that dangles down from the flower and touches lower leaves. During winter might drop leaves.
