What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Wise mango - a very good cultivar that was lost over the years. Wise is from Miami, and was part of the post-1930s boom in mango cultivar introduction in South Florida. Many of those cultivars are no longer propagated even though many had good eating qualities. The Wise mango fruit has almost round shape and very little fiber if any. Sweet, juicy and flavorful.

A Condo variety from Hawaii, fungus resistant and tolerant to high air humidity. It was selected by University of Hawaii in 1970s seedling of Irwin. It has a very compact growth habit. Excellent for containers! It is a heavy producing small tree with excellent fruit quality. The ripe skin is yellow with a red or purple blush. The fruit is oblong shape of 28 oz, the flesh is tangerine orange and firm with a rich sweetness of Indian spice and just a hint of citrus. The season was late in comparison with other varieties and the fruit had exceptional storage and long distance transport characteristics. The fruit matures over a long period, mid-July to October. It has good flavor, excellent disease resistance and good appearance. The tree growth is vigorous but manageable and responded well to annual pruning with consistent, heavy yields and excellent disease tolerance. The Rapoza mango is one of the favorite choices for the small mango industry in Hawaii, because the red color and generous size of the fruit.

The original plant came from Key West, it has Peach colored flowers.
These plants propagated from cutting from that one unique plant.
The plant is known by a variety of names including Mareer, Kerosene wood, Manjak, Snottygobbles, Glueberry, Narrow-leafed Bird Lime Tree, Kanawa, Tou, and Kou.
The seeds are edible. The wood of the tree is soft, durable, easily worked, and resistant to termites. It burns readily, and this led to the nickname of Kerosene Tree in Papua New Guinea. In ancient Hawaii kou wood was used to make umeke (bowls), utensils, and umeke laau (large calabashes) because it did not impart a foul taste to food. The flowers were used to make lei, while a dye for kapa cloth and aho (fishing lines) was derived from the leaves.

Origin: Tropical West Africa. A curious flower! Wild and unusual floral display arrives from late spring to fall on this shrubby vine. Clusters of cream-colored flowers bedecked with long, curly streamers and a rust-tinted throat. Occurring off-and-on throughout the year, flowering is heaviest in spring and summer. The faintly fragrant flowers are short trumpets with five curled petals that are very light pink (aging to creamy light yellow) with a reddish brown base. The tips of the petals become narrowed and elongated, forming a twisting, sticky string that dangles down from the flower and touches lower leaves. During winter might drop leaves.

We finally have the plants, and yes, they bloomed and fragrance is amazing! This Cerbera hybrid has beautiful striped red-and-white flowers that are highly fragrant. Fragrance is the most intense you can imagine and is much better than all jasmines and gardenias all together. The plant is very similar to plumeria in growth habit. Beautiful mauve colored leaves are very ornamental. We believe that this plant will become one of the most wanted in rare plants market.
