Purple Arabian Lilac from East Africa. A medium size, fast growing bush with woody stems and dense soft foliage, purple in full sun and with silver underneath. Pretty purple flowers from spring to fall. Can be used as a hedge or a specimen plant. Attracts lots of butterflies and bees.

Evergreen tree, medium size. This small tree likes damp costal swamps, but is also cultivated as ornamental for its long, hanging strands of pink or white flowers which are comprised in numerous filaments. Bunches of flower buds are hanging down from the branches, flowers with sweet fragrance bloom in the nights of June to August. Leaves are huge, up to 2 ft long and 4-5" wide, with toothed edge, very tropical looking. They are spiraled at the end of branches.

Tree Jasmine, Radermachera Elmeri. Tropical tree small to medium size, with fragrant tubular flowers, similar to Radermachera Kunming, but bigger, with similar leaf structure; it is more fast growing and vigorous. The scent resembles roses, juicy fruit, candies, fine cologne all together and can be smelled from many yards away. Leaves are very ornamental and have a fountain-like architecture. In Thailand, the tree symbolizes simplicity, endurance, advancement, and peacefulness. Extract from these flowers is used in village pharmacy as relaxant and aphrodisiac.

Variegated Butter Cup, Cup of gold. Striking vine with glossy leaves and large showy white to yellow flowers.The flowers are truly spectacular, shaped like a chalice, 6-10" long, flaring open to 4-7" across. The five lobes of the corolla are reflexed, and each lobe is marked with a narrow purplish brown ridge on the inside. The flowers start out yellow and turn deeper golden as they age. They are fragrant, especially at night, with a scent reminiscent of coconut. Cup of gold blooms intermittently through the year, but mainly in the winter dry season.

Rare in cultivation, this small tree or bush should get more attention from tropical plant collectors.The plant is very nice, easy growing and make those "jelly beans" like berries at least twice/year. Bamboo ground orchid produces pinkish flowers at the top of tall cane-like pseudobulbs. It's the only species in the genus. The plants are quite tall; they'll reach at least hip level, possibly over your head, and their vegetative resemblance to bamboo can be uncanny. The long pseudobulbs have leaves alternating along their length, similar to Epidendrum orchids. The flower stems, which emerge from the top of the canes, produce several flowers sequentially, so that there will be one at a time over an extended period. The flowers are white with a purple-to-pink lip, and shaped similarly to a Cattleya orchid flower. They are 2-3 inches across, and can appear for much of the year, especially in summer.

Shiso is a perennial plant that may be cultivated as an annual in temperate climates. The Japanese name shiso is a loan word from Chinese zisu that means purple. Bunches of green shiso leaves packaged in styrofoam trays are now familiar sights on the supermarket shelves in Japan, as well as in Japanese food markets in the West. The oilseed crop, is the source of perilla oil. It is used as an ingredient in Korean cuisine, both "wild sesame'" (deulggae), and "sesame leaves". It is known in Japan as egoma. The red perilla has red leaves and used mostly in fish stews in China. Koreans make pickled "wild sesame" perilla leaves with red chili powder and soy sauce. Oil extracted from P. frutescens var. frutescens is still used to cover cookies in rural areas of Korea. Sometimes, the seeds are ground and added to soup for seasoning in Korea. Parts of the plants eaten are the leaves, flower and buds from the flower stalks, fruits and seeds, and sprouts. Japanese use green shiso leaves raw with sashimi. Dried leaves are also infused to make tea.

Tropical Aster, Ironweed, Bitterleaf. Vernonia is known for having intense purple flowers. The genus is named for the English botanist William Vernon. Common names include bitterleaf, ewuro, ndole and onugbu. They are common in most West African and Central African countries. They are one of the most widely consumed leaf vegetables of Cameroon, where they are a key ingredient of Ndolé. The leaves have a sweet and bitter taste. They are sold fresh or dried, and are a typical ingredient in egusi soup.

Clerodendrum inerme, Volkameria inermis. Wild Jasmine, Sorcerers Bush. A hardy, straggling shrub, with closely arranged, almost round, shiny, deep green leaves. The plant is always in flower. The flowers are white and very fragrant, with spreading five corolla lobes, 1" long white tubes and long purple stamens. As the specific name implies, the stems are smooth and are devoid of thorns. The plant is not choosy about the soil and can even withstand droughts. Seaside clerodendrum, as its name suggests, grows well along the beach tolerating the salt spray of the ocean and the harsh rays of the sun. It is a versatile plant and can be grown as a topiary or as a bonsai. It is its hardy nature and the closely held bunches and leaves that promoted it into a garden plant. The plants is salt-, heat- and wind-tolerant.

Wild Frangipani. Voacanga thouarsii grows as a small tree. Its fragrant flowers feature a pale green, creamy or white corolla. It has numerous local medicinal uses in Africa.

Nymania capensis is known in English as "Chinese Lantern" because of the shape of its bright, colorful fruit, and in Afrikaans as "klapper" (meaning "firecracker" because children sometimes pop the capsules for fun). The plant has been reported to have been used in folk medicine.

White Berry Bush, Chinese Waterberry. Flueggea virosa is a dioecious, multistemmed, fast-growing, bushy shrub, with some small, thorn-like branches. It bears very small flowers which are creamy green. Fruit are white and fleshy. The small fruit is sweet and eaten by people, animals and birds when ripe. The roots and fruits are believed to be an effective snakebite remedy. Roots of this plant are also used in some African communities medicinally.
Sow the seeds in a well-drained seedling growth medium. Germination is normally very good. It is a low maintenance plant that can grow without any extra feeding except watering at least once every second week. Once this plant is established, routine maintenance is unnecessary. It attracts birds and butterflies. It can also be used for creating a hedge or barrier.

Red Rhipsalis. Arched then completely pendant flat tapeworm stems turn deep violet red in high light; tiny flowers followed by ornamental shell berries lining both edges of the ribbon stems most attractively.

Red Pitaya with white flesh. David Bowie is a slender white variety that has a sweet and tangy flavor that is somewhat lemony. The fruit are medium to large weighing up to a pound.
