Perfect colorful plant for small spaces and ground cover in both sun or shade locations, this rare variety has amazing colorful foliage with a combination of red, pink, orange, yellow and green! Very rare form that we call "Watermelon".
Alternantheras are grown exclusively for their colorful foliage - usually rich purple to burgundy leaves. Spreading foliage mounds to 12-30" tall. Common names are all in reference to the often brilliantly colored leaves which provide foliage contrast to gardens and container plantings. Best foliage colors are developed in full sun. May also be grown indoors as a houseplant. Pinching stems or shearing will keep plants compact and bushy.

Groundcover and low-growing 2ftSemi-shadeEpiphyteRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowers

This bromeliad is very rare in cultivation and hard to find. This species is native to Bolivia and Brazil. This species must be considered one of the more spectacular and desirable of the larger growing, hummingbird pollinated Billbergia's in the Heliconidae section. Individual growths are strikingly narrow and upright, forming artistic, trumpet shaped vases. Mature growths flower reliably in a years time. The inflorescence carry bright pink bracts, below which hang the contrasting rich purple flowers. These are fresh seeds which can germinate in only a few days after planting. They are best planted being barely poked into a medium which contains peat-moss and/or finely milled sphagnum, as they require light for germination. Kept moist in a sealed bag or terrarium initially, seedlings develop amazingly quickly, and older plants will take more sunlight than the majority of bromeliads. A wonderful species who's seeds are otherwise impossible to find commercially.

Averrhoa carambola var Golden Star - Starfruit, grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Originated in Homestead FL, Golden Star cultivar was developed at the Tropical Research and Education Center of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station (FAES), released in 1965. It has large, deeply winged fruit. Skin bright golden yellow, very waxy. Flesh is juicy, crisp, mildly subacid to sweet in flavor, containing no fibers. High in carbohydrates and vitamins A and C. The tree bears well and regularly without cross-pollination. The Golden Star carambola as a very vigorous and healthy cultivar is widely used as a main source of rootstocks for high-pH, calcareous soils.

A new type of Julie Mango that has much better production and decease resistance than the original Julie mango, so much loved by people in Jamaica and Trinidad. Super Julie is a more vigorous and hardy tree but still can be grown in a container. It is an excellent choice for those who really want the particular variety Julie (it has indeed a unique excellent taste!) but didn't have much luck with original Julie which is cold sensitive and difficult to grow. Super Julie is an answer for all Julie lovers!

Venus Fly Trap is a small herbaceous wetland plant characterized by unique hinged clamshell-like traps that spring closed to catch unwary insects. Rosettes of reclining leaves, each leaf consists of a relatively broad petiole (leaf stem) and a leaf blade which is modified into the trap. The perennial Venus flytrap blooms in May and June with white, five-petaled blossoms which are held a few inches above the foliage. Caring for Venus flytrap in cultivation is not too difficult, and they require no major difference to general Carnivorous Plants care. Keep the planting medium constantly moist. During the winter, keep it just barely moist.

Mexican petunia Compact Pink. A spectacular dwarf variety of this easy to grow, a heat-tolerant perennial is loaded with light pink flowers throughout the warm season. The large, petunia-like blooms are backed by dense clumps of narrow, dark green foliage. Quickly fills in as a ground cover.
Dwarf ruellia plants never get over 1 ft tall and the flowers are bunched right in with the leaves on very short stems. Although the blossoms each last only one day, there are usually plenty of buds forming so that there is a succession of new blooms over long periods. The leaves of this ruellia are dark green and very slender. The flower resembles a Petunia in form. As with the other ruellias, this flower does well under quite a variety of conditions, including full sun to shade, as well as dry to damp. They are rather cold-tender and can sometimes be killed by a very hard freeze, but most of the time they come back from the roots.

Photinia Red Tip

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

This relative of a Rose receives its name from the fact that young leaves are red, gradually changing to a dark green as they mature. It also has bunshes of pretty white flowers attracting bees and butterflies. The leaves are the starring feature of this plant. Each new leaf that unfurls is a bright shade of red or bronze, but they gradually become a solid dark green as they mature. By continually trimming the ends of the shoots, the plant is stimulated to keep producing new leaves throughout the year.
Photinias are very popular ornamental shrubs, grown for their fruit and foliage. Numerous hybrids and cultivars are available; several of the cultivars are selected for their strikingly bright red young leaves in spring and summer. The natural range of these species is restricted to warm temperate Asia, from the Himalaya east to Japan and south to India and Thailand.
