Royal poinciana - one of the most popular tropical trees covered with bright red orchid-like flowers from late winter through early summer. A must for any tropical garden, this tree however requires space since it spreads its branches 30-40 ft wide or more.
"The Royal Poinciana is one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the USA, and probably among the top 10 on this planet. In full bloom, it is like a regal elephant caparisoned in red and yellow brilliance." (Larry M. Schokman, The Kampong, National Tropical Botanic Garden)

Fairy Petticoats. The masses of white to pinkish flowers with unusual liquorice scent are hanging downwards, like those of lily-of-the-valley, with cup-shaped feathery petals and fringed edge, recemble small hanging skirts, hence the attractive common name of Fairy Petticoats.
The stones of Elaeocarpus trees are used in India as necklaces, stained or set in gold. Elaeocarpus is particularly important in rosaries worn by Hindu mendicants, followers of Shiva, as they afford assistance to the attainment of Heaven and Shiva's company. Rudraksha tree has been given a very special place and it is credited with mystical and divine properties. It is said that the seed contains the secrets of entire evolution of the cosmos within it (beads are generally used with Shiva mantra) and the plant is originated from the tear drops of Lord Shiva...

The dwarf coral tree is an ideal tree or shrub for the small garden, especially for people who love the scarlet flowers of the common coral tree (Erythrina lysistemon) but don't have the space for a large tree. Its small dimensions make it ideally suited to high density housing complexes where garden space is limited. It produces an impressive display of scarlet red flowers en-masse, which are a favorite with many different birds who enjoy the nectar. It likes full sun and well-drained soil and bloom best after a period of drought. Quite large cuttings root easily.

Eugenia neonitida (selloi) - Pitangatuba

Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunRegular waterModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Pitangatuba - native of Rio de Janeiro. It looks like a giant yellow cherry. The taste, however, is nothing bitter, and resembles that of Uvaia (Eugenia pyriformis). Great potential for pulp production, is much richer in vitamins and minerals than other cherries. Until recently it was almost unknown to the fruit growers. In its natural habitat, is a compact shrub, from 4 to 6 ft. Its trunk has a rough outer shell, it gives off in plates. The leaves are leathery, dark green on the upper surface and lighter on the bottom. The ribs are well printed on top. Very slow growing, but can be quick to flower. 2-3 year old plants can flower and fruit when barely a foot tall. Foliage and flowers have similarities to the Eugenia uniflora and the shrub makes an attractive ornamental.
Bright yellow fruit is oblong, 2-3" size, like a giant cherry, thick pulp, acidic and very juicy and aromatic. Flavor is pleasant, making it sweeter when grown in full sun.
Tolerant to salt wind conditions. Excellent container plant.

Naturally grows near seashores, so it likely salt and sand tolerant. It may be used as a rootstock for mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana - mangosteen grafting). It is very tolerant adverse soil and climatic conditions, being adapted to growing in sandy and rocky soils near the beach in its native habitat. It also grows well in acid clay soils, and tolerates drought as well as high rainfall.

VERY RARE! Fragrant ixora - amazing rare plant with highly fragrant pinkish-white flowers.
Almost all ixoras do best in acid soil, free from nematodes, a moist organic mix that is also well drained. Ixora can endure some salt spray on the wind. A common problem is our alkaline soils, especially near concrete and pools, causing poor health, poor foliage and poor blooming.
