Stifftia chrysantha - Pompom, Rabo-de-Cutia

Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunRegular waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Stifftia chrysantha is an exotic, rare flowering small tree with spectacular flowers, endemic to the vast tropical savanna ecoregion of Brazil called Cerrado. It grows into a bushy, attractive tree between 8 and 15 ft tall and starts flowering within 1.5 - 2.5 years from seed. It is a very rewarding plant that blooms 9 months out of the year, starting in Winter with great intensity during July-September, with each flower staying on the plant for several weeks. Seeds ripen from September through November.
The tree belongs to Aster family (Compositae) and has nothing to do with Powderpuffs which are from Bean (Fabaceae) family. The flower has 30 to 40 green, imbricated scales with short hairs, and actinomorphic corollas are orange below and darker above. After flowering, the inflorescence blows apart, which would scatter seeds. The dried center remaining is very attractive, like a small dried flower, and lasts for many months.
Stifftia can be grown in full sun to partial shade and is relatively cold tolerant, can take short cold spells.
The plant doesn't like wet feet and heavy/soggy soils; requires very well drained, acidic soil. We strongly recommend to use our professional soilless mix. Let soil slightly dry between waterings. It can be grown in full sun to partial shade and is relatively cold tolerant, can take short cold spells. If grown in a pot, try to keep the container shaded because roots don't like to be overheated. The plant needs monthly applications of slow release fertilizer as well as extra iron - use micro-nutrients to keep leaves green and healthy.

Strelitzia reginae - Mandelas Gold Bird of Paradise (Yellow)

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersBlue/lavender/purple flowersYellow/orange flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Mandela's Gold is rare, yellow form of the famous orange Bird of Paradise. This spectacular cultivar has flaring, yellow sepals and blue petals reminiscent of a crested tropical bird. Like the orange form, it is easy to grow in the right conditions. Yellow-flowering strelitzias have been known for a number of years, plants have cropped up in France, California, Australia, Japan and in South Africa, but always as isolated specimens. Left to their own devices, the seeds from these yellow forms will not breed true as they will most likely have been pollinated by an orange plant. To get yellow progeny, two yellow plants must be crossed. It took nearly twenty years of careful selection and hand-pollination, and in 1994 the original stock had been built up enough to enable us to introduce the yellow strelitzia to horticulture. It was released and traded under the name Kirstenbosch Gold until 1996 when the NBI was granted permission to re-name it in honur of Nelson Mandela.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Banana bush, rare variety. Jasmine-like white pin-wheeled fragrant flowers with yellow center, 5 petals with long tips fusing to form tube, regularly symmetrical.
The flowers are then followed by a pair of seeds that look like two bananas hanging in opposite directions, hence its common name. They start out red and then turn yellow when they ripen.
In some sources Tabernaemontana pandacaqui is indicated as synonim of Tabernaemontana orientalis however in our opinion they are different, with T. orientalis having pointed petals and T. pandacaqui rounded ones.

Very cute low growing shrub native of the South Pacific, with Jasmine-like white pin-wheeled fragrant flowers, 5 petals with long tips fusing to form tube, regularly symmetrical.
It is a perennial shrub that grows only 3-4 ft tall. Its lush green foliage is a great backdrop for the abundant and continuous small white flowers that are pinwheel shaped. The flowers are then followed by a pair of seeds that look like two bananas hanging in opposite directions, hence its common name. They start out red and then turn yellow when they ripen.
Banana Bush works well as a mass planting, specimen shrub, or containerized accent piece. It is also drought tolerant once established and is a moderate grower. Ectra benefit is lack of pest problems associated with it. This plant is truly a winner.
In some sources Tabernaemontana pandacaqui is indicated as synonim of Tabernaemontana orientalis however in our opinion they are different, with T. orientalis having pointed petals and T. pandacaqui rounded ones.

This variety commonly has been called "Salmon" but it fact it is bright orange. We changed the name to avoid confusion with another variety "Apricot" (item 5973) that is closer to salmon color.
One of the most rewarding flowering plants! Stunning display of orange flowers year round, from winter through spring and summer. Unlike other tecomarias, it is more of an upright shrub with naturally compact shape and doesn't shoot long leggy branches. You don't have to prune it, it keeps naturally rounded, bushy shape. Attracts butterflies.
It's an eye catching flower that appears all year round!

Wercklea ferox is a stunning rare shrub in the Hibiscus family originally from Costa Rica. A gem for tropical plant collector! This plant gets huge, up to 24" across green round leaves with gorgeous red veins. Red color seems more visible on the underside of the leaves. This plant starts by forming red buds, only to pop out a yellow delicate Hibiscus-like flower. They are quite pretty as well but often hidden from the beautiful large leaves. You can see them during the warmer months. This plant can be grown in full sun to bright filtered light. It takes a bit of room to grow and makes a captivating focal point in the garden, and it is a conversation piece between gardeners since it is so rare and not often seen. It is a rare plant for collectors who value the exotic. If it overgrows its given space, it can be pruned back to its original form and it will regrow quickly.
