Ligustrum Jack Frost is a very striking evergreen shrub that makes a wonderful hedge and looks equally as nice all by itself as an accent planting. Shiny, leathery green leaves have creamy white edges, providing an excellent contrast to any landscape. In late spring and early summer, it puts out clusters of small, white flowers very similar to those of its ancestor, the Japanese Privet. Following the spring bloom, berries persist through the summer and attract birds. Moderate growth, takes either full sun or part shade. A very versatile landscape plant for hedges, foundation plantings, topiary or screens. Hard to beat for adding form, adaptability and color contrast to the landscape. It is disease resistant and grows well in a wide variety of soil types and climates. With a full and upright form, it makes an ideal mid-size hedge but is extremely versatile and can also be planted by itself as an accent and foundation planting. Mature specimen tend to take on a more golden yellow color as the leaves mature. It adds bulk to the landscape when desired while adding great color to the landscape. Pruning is recommended 2-3 times per year to maintain desired shape.

Perilla frutescens - Shiso, Shishi Herb, Beefsteak Plant

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterSpice or herbEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This unique plant is originally used in real Japanese sushi serving (instead of plastic "grass" used now in Western world).
Shiso is a perennial plant that may be cultivated as an annual in temperate climates. The Japanese name shiso is a loan word from Chinese zisu that means purple. Bunches of green shiso leaves packaged in styrofoam trays are now familiar sights on the supermarket shelves in Japan, as well as in Japanese food markets in the West. The oilseed crop, is the source of perilla oil. It is used as an ingredient in Korean cuisine, both "wild sesame'" (deulggae), and "sesame leaves". It is known in Japan as egoma. The red perilla has red leaves and used mostly in fish stews in China. Koreans make pickled "wild sesame" perilla leaves with red chili powder and soy sauce. Oil extracted from P. frutescens var. frutescens is still used to cover cookies in rural areas of Korea. Sometimes, the seeds are ground and added to soup for seasoning in Korea. Parts of the plants eaten are the leaves, flower and buds from the flower stalks, fruits and seeds, and sprouts. Japanese use green shiso leaves raw with sashimi. Dried leaves are also infused to make tea.
the plant is also called rattlesnake weed, because the sound the dried stalks make when disturbed along the footpath is reminiscent of the rattlesnake rattling sound.

Plectranthus amboinicus - Cuban Oregano

Groundcover and low-growing 2ftSemi-shadeModerate waterOrnamental foliageFragrantSpice or herb

Also called Solenostemon amboinicus, Allspice - Cuban Oregano. Excellent fragrant herb that is ideal in mixed containers and patio planters. Leaves are used for cooking as basil. The fresh leaves are used in beef salad in Thailand. A species also is cultivated as a house plant because of its beautiful leaves.
It is often called Course Leaf Thyme. Beautiful, fragrant, strong, medicinal... there is so much good to say about this plant. A popular herb among the West Indies, the beneficial and useful properties go on and on. Have a bad cough? Try a few bold leaves with a cup of tea for a cure. Want the most tender pork of your life? Try stuffing a loin with some course leaf thyme. In the garden, the kitchen, or medicine cabinet, you will love this little guy! And the best part? It is strong; very strong. Where as so many other herbs have such fragile or short life cycles, this plant will surely outlast them. An amazing compliment and must have addition to your herb or tropical garden.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

This showy shrub with highly ornamental interesting foliage is native to the paleotropics and neotropics. It has erect branches and in nature can grow to a height of up to 24 feet. In cultivation, it stays much smaller and often used as a container specimen, sometimes in interior design. Leaves are commonly variegated with margins of white or pale yellow, but can also be entirely dark green. This slow-growing tropical foliage plant makes a perfect houseplant and requires very little care.
