Neomarica gracilis - African Iris

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersBlue/lavender/purple flowersUnusual color

From the Iris family comes this Neomarica with sword shaped leaves and fragrant flowers. The delicate flowers last only a day but the plant continues to form new blooms for long periods of time during late spring months. Makes also an excellent houseplant. This is not a water Iris, be careful not to overwater. Neomarica gracilis is a type of walking Iris. Once the flower is spent, the stem that it was born on lays to the ground and from that a new plant is formed. For that reason it is said to be walking across your garden. You can divide plants and plant them in new locations.

Perilla frutescens - Shiso, Shishi Herb, Beefsteak Plant

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterSpice or herbEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This unique plant is originally used in real Japanese sushi serving (instead of plastic "grass" used now in Western world).
Shiso is a perennial plant that may be cultivated as an annual in temperate climates. The Japanese name shiso is a loan word from Chinese zisu that means purple. Bunches of green shiso leaves packaged in styrofoam trays are now familiar sights on the supermarket shelves in Japan, as well as in Japanese food markets in the West. The oilseed crop, is the source of perilla oil. It is used as an ingredient in Korean cuisine, both "wild sesame'" (deulggae), and "sesame leaves". It is known in Japan as egoma. The red perilla has red leaves and used mostly in fish stews in China. Koreans make pickled "wild sesame" perilla leaves with red chili powder and soy sauce. Oil extracted from P. frutescens var. frutescens is still used to cover cookies in rural areas of Korea. Sometimes, the seeds are ground and added to soup for seasoning in Korea. Parts of the plants eaten are the leaves, flower and buds from the flower stalks, fruits and seeds, and sprouts. Japanese use green shiso leaves raw with sashimi. Dried leaves are also infused to make tea.
the plant is also called rattlesnake weed, because the sound the dried stalks make when disturbed along the footpath is reminiscent of the rattlesnake rattling sound.

Photinia Red Tip

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

This relative of a Rose receives its name from the fact that young leaves are red, gradually changing to a dark green as they mature. It also has bunshes of pretty white flowers attracting bees and butterflies. The leaves are the starring feature of this plant. Each new leaf that unfurls is a bright shade of red or bronze, but they gradually become a solid dark green as they mature. By continually trimming the ends of the shoots, the plant is stimulated to keep producing new leaves throughout the year.
Photinias are very popular ornamental shrubs, grown for their fruit and foliage. Numerous hybrids and cultivars are available; several of the cultivars are selected for their strikingly bright red young leaves in spring and summer. The natural range of these species is restricted to warm temperate Asia, from the Himalaya east to Japan and south to India and Thailand.

Plectranthus amboinicus - Cuban Oregano

Also called Solenostemon amboinicus, Allspice - Cuban Oregano. Excellent fragrant herb that is ideal in mixed containers and patio planters. Leaves are used for cooking as basil. The fresh leaves are used in beef salad in Thailand. A species also is cultivated as a house plant because of its beautiful leaves.
It is often called Course Leaf Thyme. Beautiful, fragrant, strong, medicinal... there is so much good to say about this plant. A popular herb among the West Indies, the beneficial and useful properties go on and on. Have a bad cough? Try a few bold leaves with a cup of tea for a cure. Want the most tender pork of your life? Try stuffing a loin with some course leaf thyme. In the garden, the kitchen, or medicine cabinet, you will love this little guy! And the best part? It is strong; very strong. Where as so many other herbs have such fragile or short life cycles, this plant will surely outlast them. An amazing compliment and must have addition to your herb or tropical garden.

Rosemary. This half hardy perennial forms an evergreen shrub that has been cultivated throughout time for its lovely fragrance. Rosemary does not lose its flavour by long cooking. The fresh leaves have a more pure fragrance and are therefore preferred whenever available. Use rosemary for fish, meat (especially poultry), but also for vegetables. It is frequently recommended for potatoes and suitable for vegetables fried in olive oil.

Mexican petunia Compact Pink. A spectacular dwarf variety of this easy to grow, a heat-tolerant perennial is loaded with light pink flowers throughout the warm season. The large, petunia-like blooms are backed by dense clumps of narrow, dark green foliage. Quickly fills in as a ground cover.
Dwarf ruellia plants never get over 1 ft tall and the flowers are bunched right in with the leaves on very short stems. Although the blossoms each last only one day, there are usually plenty of buds forming so that there is a succession of new blooms over long periods. The leaves of this ruellia are dark green and very slender. The flower resembles a Petunia in form. As with the other ruellias, this flower does well under quite a variety of conditions, including full sun to shade, as well as dry to damp. They are rather cold-tender and can sometimes be killed by a very hard freeze, but most of the time they come back from the roots.

Firecracker fern. This is a low-growing shrub, distinctive for its long, drooping, usually leafless stems and the almost continuous clusters of small, lemon-yellow tubular flowers. Each plant produces many branches and is particularly effective when grown in a raised bed or rock garden so that the flower-laden stems hang down. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Russelia will grow under both moist and dry conditions, but requires full sunlight and occasional pruning to flower well.

Tagetes lemmonii - Lemon Marigold

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunModerate waterDry conditionsYellow/orange flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Lemon marigold, Copper Canyon Daisy - usually a small shrub that can be trimmed to a groundcover level, this plant can reach up a few feet if you let it go. It has very aromatic, airy foliage and vibrant yellow daisy-like blooms.
A strong lemon fragrance from the finely divided foliage is released when rubbed or brushed against. Orange-yellow flowers in fall-winter with off bloom in other seasons - flowering is triggered by short day length so overcast weather can extend flowering in spring. Plant in sun or part shade in well-drained soil. Drought tolerant in coastal gardens but looks best with a little irrigation - too much water or too little light produces leggy plants that don't bloom well. One of the best butterfly attractors!

Tillandsia sp. - Airplant

Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeEpiphyteRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Tillandsias, called by some the world's most unusual airplants, are a delightful addition to any greenhouse. They are easy to care for, exotic to look at, and interesting to study. Tillandsias are air plants, even more so than other bromeliads and much like vandaceous orchids. Tillandsia's are without doubt one of the worlds most amazing group of plants. Tillandsias have developed the ability to take all their food and water through specially designed cells on their leaves and therefore can exist without any roots for ever. Roots are used by most species to attach themselves and nothing more. Tillandsias can grow in places no other plants can survive including electrical cable on power lines. They prefer light airy conditions and daily misting in areas of low humidity. Enjoy your tillandsia plant for years of blooming and pupping with good light, fresh air, and adequate but not overabundant watering, particularly in cooler weather.

Spanish moss is a flowering plant that grows upon larger trees, commonly the Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) or Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) in the southeastern United States from Texas and Florida north to Southern Arkansas and Virginia. It is also native to Central and South America. It was introduced to Hawaii in the 19th century, and became a popular ornamental and lei plant. It is often called Pele hair after Pele the Hawaiian goddess. Spanish moss is not a moss, it is a flowering bromeliad plant that grows hanging from tree branches in full sun or partial shade. Spanish moss is an epiphyte which absorbs nutrients (especially calcium) and water from the air and rainfall. Spanish moss is also colloquially known as air plant.
