What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterBlue/lavender/purple flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This showy Anise-scented Sage produces long spires of large, deep blue flowers from mid-summer to frost. It forms a tall bush up to 5 feet tall by 2 feet wide that is great for the back of the border. It is drought tolerant because of its unusual, moisture-conserving rhizomes. Plant height can be reduced by cutting back stems in late spring. Plants grown in protected locations with winter mulch may survive mild winters in USDA Zones 6-7. Salvias are some of the showiest plants for containers, annual borders, and mixed borders. The flowers are made up of two lips: the upper one forms a hood over whiskery stamens and the lower lip, which itself is wide and toothed. Butterflies and hummingbirds love them.

Salvia guaranitica (Anise-scented sage, Hummingbird sage) is native to South America. It is a perennial subshrub growing 4 ft tall, spreading into a large patch through its spreading roots. Flowers are uncommonly true blue. Var. 'Black and Blue' has very dark almost pure black calyxes calyx. Flowers are borne in showy 10 in spikes from early summer to late autumn. Needs moderate water. It might be possible to maintain blue anise sage in zone 7 if mulched heavily in winter.
Blue anise sedge is a reliable bloomer throughout the whole summer. The deep blue-flowered cultivars are especially showy. Hummingbirds and butterflies love most of the sages and this one is no exception, so be sure to include it in your butterfly garden.

Sprawling evergreen perennial with ascending and/or procumbent stems. It typically grows to 9-18" tall and spreads to 24" wide. It thrives in hot, humid climates where it produces a non-stop bloom of dark blue to lavender fan-shaped flowers in the leaf axils on trailing stems throughout summer.
