Firecracker fern. This is a low-growing shrub, distinctive for its long, drooping, usually leafless stems and the almost continuous clusters of small, lemon-yellow tubular flowers. Each plant produces many branches and is particularly effective when grown in a raised bed or rock garden so that the flower-laden stems hang down. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Russelia will grow under both moist and dry conditions, but requires full sunlight and occasional pruning to flower well.

Salvia guaranitica (Anise-scented sage, Hummingbird sage) is native to South America. It is a perennial subshrub growing 4 ft tall, spreading into a large patch through its spreading roots. Flowers are uncommonly true blue. Var. 'Black and Blue' has very dark almost pure black calyxes calyx. Flowers are borne in showy 10 in spikes from early summer to late autumn. Needs moderate water. It might be possible to maintain blue anise sage in zone 7 if mulched heavily in winter.
Blue anise sedge is a reliable bloomer throughout the whole summer. The deep blue-flowered cultivars are especially showy. Hummingbirds and butterflies love most of the sages and this one is no exception, so be sure to include it in your butterfly garden.

Stifftia chrysantha - Pompom, Rabo-de-Cutia

Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunRegular waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Stifftia chrysantha is an exotic, rare flowering small tree with spectacular flowers, endemic to the vast tropical savanna ecoregion of Brazil called Cerrado. It grows into a bushy, attractive tree between 8 and 15 ft tall and starts flowering within 1.5 - 2.5 years from seed. It is a very rewarding plant that blooms 9 months out of the year, starting in Winter with great intensity during July-September, with each flower staying on the plant for several weeks. Seeds ripen from September through November.
The tree belongs to Aster family (Compositae) and has nothing to do with Powderpuffs which are from Bean (Fabaceae) family. The flower has 30 to 40 green, imbricated scales with short hairs, and actinomorphic corollas are orange below and darker above. After flowering, the inflorescence blows apart, which would scatter seeds. The dried center remaining is very attractive, like a small dried flower, and lasts for many months.
Stifftia can be grown in full sun to partial shade and is relatively cold tolerant, can take short cold spells.
The plant doesn't like wet feet and heavy/soggy soils; requires very well drained, acidic soil. We strongly recommend to use our professional soilless mix. Let soil slightly dry between waterings. It can be grown in full sun to partial shade and is relatively cold tolerant, can take short cold spells. If grown in a pot, try to keep the container shaded because roots don't like to be overheated. The plant needs monthly applications of slow release fertilizer as well as extra iron - use micro-nutrients to keep leaves green and healthy.

Tagetes lemmonii - Lemon Marigold

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunModerate waterDry conditionsYellow/orange flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Lemon marigold, Copper Canyon Daisy - usually a small shrub that can be trimmed to a groundcover level, this plant can reach up a few feet if you let it go. It has very aromatic, airy foliage and vibrant yellow daisy-like blooms.
A strong lemon fragrance from the finely divided foliage is released when rubbed or brushed against. Orange-yellow flowers in fall-winter with off bloom in other seasons - flowering is triggered by short day length so overcast weather can extend flowering in spring. Plant in sun or part shade in well-drained soil. Drought tolerant in coastal gardens but looks best with a little irrigation - too much water or too little light produces leggy plants that don't bloom well. One of the best butterfly attractors!

Chaste tree carries several sacred names, which more or less directly refer to its reputation as an aphrodisiac. In ancient Greece, the tree was called hagnos chaste, which apparently the early Christians confused with Latin agnus lamb, the Christian symbol of purity. Under the name agnus castus chaste lamb, the plants was often used among Christian monks as a help against the evils of the more fleshy desires. The chaste tree is a beautiful little deciduous tree or large shrub with a showy summertime flower display. When it's blooming, due to the similarity of the flowers, the chaste tree is sometimes mistaken for Butterfly Bush (Buddleja). The chaste tree is a sprawling plant that grows 10-20 ft and about as wide. Branched flower clusters are produced on new wood in late spring and early summer in a great flush that makes the tree look like a hazy purple cloud. Flowers are followed by a fleshy fruit that contains four seeds that are sometimes used as seasoning, similar to black pepper. Easy to grow in almost any soil that has good drainage! Even tolerant of salt drift.
It has high medicinal value in herbal remedies for female health.
