Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterOrnamental foliageYellow/orange flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Wercklea ferox is a stunning rare shrub in the Hibiscus family originally from Costa Rica. A gem for tropical plant collector! This plant gets huge, up to 24" across green round leaves with gorgeous red veins. Red color seems more visible on the underside of the leaves. This plant starts by forming red buds, only to pop out a yellow delicate Hibiscus-like flower. They are quite pretty as well but often hidden from the beautiful large leaves. You can see them during the warmer months. This plant can be grown in full sun to bright filtered light. It takes a bit of room to grow and makes a captivating focal point in the garden, and it is a conversation piece between gardeners since it is so rare and not often seen. It is a rare plant for collectors who value the exotic. If it overgrows its given space, it can be pruned back to its original form and it will regrow quickly.

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersSpice or herbEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Wiri Wiri Pepper. A variety from Guyana, the Wiri Wiri pepper is the illustrious gem; hard sought and rarely found. This plant produces good yields of small 1/2" berry shaped hot peppers. Peppers grow upright, are very hot, and turn from green, to orange, to red when mature.
What makes it so much different than any other hot pepper grown in the garden or bought at the store?
Hot? Yes, it is important that hot peppers are, but the people who really know, know that it is not just about heat, it is about flavor! And that is exactly what makes this little red gem so special. Guyanese dinners will only take one of those meals for you to never forget! The secret of their food is the flavor, and one of the cornerstone ingredients in many of their dishes is the Wiri pepper. The Guyanese population claim that it is not just a key ingredient to their diet, but also to why they are so good looking, live so long, and have such great skin.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Also called "First Love" (sometimes misspelled as YAshioka), this cultivar is one of the darkest green of all gardenias, it has a 3 to 5 inch bloom so perfect, it looks artificial. It was developed by Tadaoki Yoshioka while he lived in Hawaii, and he later brought it to Florida when he moved to Ft. Lauderdale with his family in 1954. The gardenia was named after his daughter, Aimee (Aimee Hironaka), who died in a plane crash in Dallas on August 2, 1985 (Delta Flight 191).
Aimee gardenia grows openly and upright and blooms twice a year and slightly later than others. Flower Size 3 - 5". Large grafted

Rare Dwarf Tabebuia - very compact yet fast growing collectible specimen. Bahamian Trumpet Tree, Five Fingers. Tabebuia bahamensis is similar in its appearance to its close kin T. heterophylla. However, T. bahamensis distinguishes itself from T. heterophylla with smaller leaves, and with leaflets that are slenderer, and green above and strongly whitish below. It is a slim and trim tree, with a small trunk, and delicate upright branches, and thus a striking contrast to its larger, more robust relative. Its early growth is fast in moist well drained soils, roughly 70 inches in two years. A young tree begins flowering about two to three
years after germination. It would make an ideal tree for patios.

The corm is the part of the plant that is used, as well as its tuber, which is commonly called the konnyaku potato. It is one of the most exotic, bizarre flowers. Can be easily grown in a pot as a house plant. The single leaf dormant in winter, then in spring the plant shoots out a fantastic flower. See picture of a flowering plant.
