Ixora odorata - Fragrant Ixora

Large shrub 5-10 ftShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersFragrantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

VERY RARE! Fragrant ixora - amazing rare plant with highly fragrant pinkish-white flowers.
Almost all ixoras do best in acid soil, free from nematodes, a moist organic mix that is also well drained. Ixora can endure some salt spray on the wind. A common problem is our alkaline soils, especially near concrete and pools, causing poor health, poor foliage and poor blooming.

The Thai Snow Ixora is a rare and lesser known Ixora Hybrid from Thailand. It has small rounded leaves glossy medium to deep green leaves that vary from splashed and speckled with white variegation to almost solid creamy white new growth.
The growth habit is semi-dwarf, maturing at around 2 feet with and a dense, tight, growth habit. It blooms in clusters of white to near white star shaped florets beginning in early summer. The flowers are nectar rich and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Its best and most interesting feature however is the variegated foliage and slower growth habit. This is one makes especially nice potted plants and works well as in light shade to brighten and add texture. It does not bloom as prolifically and is not as showy as most of the green leaved ixoras, so the primary feature to consider when placing is the strikingly pretty variegated leaves which vary from being lightly mottled and sprinkled cream on the older to leaves to near solid creamy white barely dusted with emerald green.

Mangifera indica - Hoaloc, Cat Hoa Loc Mango, Grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Very rare, Exotic mango variety from Vietnam. Spellings: Hoaloc, Cat Hoa Loc, Haoloica. The fruit is fiberless, oval yellow, with very thin seed. It is a rare, collectible variety. Among Vietnamese mango cultivars, Cat Hoa Loc is the most popular cultivar because of good appearance, texture, taste, and flavor. Its production ranks the first among commercial mango cultivars in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Government supports the expanding of the production area for Cat Hoa Loc mango. At the mature green stage, Cat Hoa Loc mango fruits usually turn to full ripening within 4-5 days thereby limiting distribution and marketing options.

Grows as a compact tree and can be a nice potted specimen. The plants are not too cold sensitive, and tolerate light frost - about the same cold sensitivity as Cananga odorata.
