Napoleona imperialis - Napoleons Hat

Small tree 10-20 ftUnusual color

Napoleons Hat. Esteemed for the exquisite, vividly colored, saucer shaped flowers that grow from leaf axils, or directly from trunk and stem. They are mostly grown as greenhouse specimens by collectors, but can be used as landscaping ornamentals where conditions are suited. The reniform, reddish seeds of this species constitute a false kola, which has a taste closely resembling that of true kola. The flowers are fragrant and smell like Butterscotch!

On top of that, Golden Goddess is easy to grow in a bright spot, and like most vines, it becomes more spectacular with age. Over time, the new leaves get bigger and bolder, creating a look you can't help but show off. This plant prefers bright light but avoid direct sunlight. The Golden Goddess is a moderate grower depending on its environment and is hardy in USDA Zone 9-11.

Philodendron speciosum - King of Philodendrons

ShadeSemi-shadeEpiphyteRegular waterOrnamental foliage

Philodendron speciosum is native to the jungles of a small part part of N. W. Brazil and adjacent Bolivian lowlands. It vies with P. bipinnatiffidum as producing the largest (and showiest) leaves of all the many Philodendron species... even larger that P. giganteum! The massive, almost Alocasia-like, but thick textured leaves, similar to P. giganteum, develop distinctly scalloped wavy edges and grow from an upright "trunk", almost like a palm, complete with basal prop roots. They become one of the most striking tropical plant statements imaginable! Calling P. speciosum the "King of Philodendrons" would be very reasonable.
This is an unspeakably rare plant which Top Tropicals recently had the good fortune of obtaining a few, nice, strong, healthy individuals. We may very well never have them available again.

Burle Marx is an easy to grow, prehistoric looking, low growing variety of Philodendron well suited for interiorscapes, containers and tropical landscape mass plantings. The jungle green, elliptical leaves are thick and leather-like and arranged in a upright formation. Burle Marx makes a wonderful border or ground cover plant. An Incredibly Easy Growing Ground Cover!
Can be grown indoors or out, and will be a lush and resilient addition to your garden. This plant has shiny, slender, bright green, heart-shaped leaves and reddish stems. Used as a ground cover, it will grow in a clump about 2 feet tall. If planted against a tree, it will climb vertically up the trunk. Prefers partial sun and moderate soil moisture, tolerates more sun than other philodendrons, and once established, tolerates mild drought.
Native to the tropical jungles of Brazil, this philodendron is named for the eminent Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx who championed the use of native plants in modern landscape design.

Phyllanthus acidus - Otaheite Gooseberry, Amlak - is very close related to Phyllanthus emblica (Amla, Amlaki), however it is much hardier plant. Known as amritphala in Sanskrit, which literally means the fruit of heaven or nectar fruit. It is so called because it is rich in many desirable properties, including medicinal.
Small to medium in size tree. Small tropical tree, to 20 feet. Fruits are borne in loose clusters, which hang from the tree trunk and main branches. Fruits are generally too tart for fresh eating but are esteemed for jellies, preserves and pastries. There are no commercial plantings; only in home gardens.
Amla fruit paste is a major ingredient of Chavyanprash, a popular Ayurvedic tonic. It is the richest source of vitamin C. Phyllanthus acidus is called Ari Nelli in Tamil, and the Phyllanthus emblica (Amlaki) is Muzhu Nelli in Tamil. Muzhu Nelli is even richer in Vitamin C etc.
