Blue Chaste Tree. Chaste tree carries several sacred names, which more or less directly refer to its reputation as an anaphrodisiac. The chaste tree is a sprawling plant that grows 10-20 ft and about as wide. Branched flower clusters are produced on new wood in late spring and early summer in a great flush that makes the tree look like a hazy purple cloud. Flowers are followed by a fleshy fruit that contains four seeds that are sometimes used as seasoning, similar to black pepper. Easy to grow in almost any soil that has good drainage! Even tolerant of salt drift.
Plant the seeds 1/2" deep in potting soil mix, keep damp and in bright light.

Wallichia disticha - seeds

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterOrnamental foliagePalm or palm-likeSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Wallichia disticha is an extremely unusual looking palm, in which the leaves form just two rows on either side of the trunk i.e. looking down on the palm, the leaves would all form a single straight line. It grows to about 20 ft tall, while the long, course leaflets are dark green above, and greyish white underneath.
Although it comes from the Himalaya, it comes from the lower reaches which are still tropical, so it prefers that climate, however it will grow in sheltered sub-tropical areas.

They are quite pretty as well, but often hidden from the beautiful large leaves.

Xanthorrhoea australis - seeds

Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunModerate waterDry conditionsOrnamental foliageSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Grass Tree. Commonly called Grass Trees, Xanthorrhoea plants are also known as Balga Grass to the Australian aborigines, which is their word for black boy. The Aborigines probably called these plants balga because after a wild fire, the bottom leaves burn away revealing a singed black trunk with long green reed-like leaves extending from the top of the trunk giving the appearance of black figures. All species of Xanthorrhoea are very slow growing, but they are also very long lived - up to 600 years! Long straight spears of white blossoms extend from the top of the tree especially in the year following wild fires. The flowering spikes of the grass tree were soaked in water to make a sweet drink, fresh or slightly fermented. The soft bases of the young leaves were eaten. Europeans harvested the gum to make varnishes and lacquers. Can be grown very successfully in pots.
Place seeds on top of soil surface, using draining potting mix plus sand, keep warm, only slightly moist and in bright light. Seeds can not be kept wet.

One of the most widespread of South Africa's tree species. The glossy, drooping leaves are conspicuously three-veined from the base. The branches are usually covered with stipular spines, one curved and one straight. Inconspicuous yellowish flowers are borne in clusters and produce abundant nectar that attract many insects, especially bees. The roundish fruits are russet-colored when mature and contain a dry meal-like pulp. During the Anglo-Boer War, the seeds were ground and the powder used as a coffee substitute. It is a very rewarding garden tree, growing well in any climate but a cold, wet one. It is drought and frost resistant and is a good choice for gardens where little else can grow.
