What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Many consider it the best mango had ever tasted. Very rare mango variety from Singapore. Its is a long fruit looking similar to Nam Doc Mai but with a pink blush. The season is long and can vary from year to year. It is fiberless with good flesh to seed ratio. The seed is almost paper thin. This mango would be perfect for the container considering its slow growth habit. May be aslo spelled Maha Chanok or Maha Chanook. See more info about Mango varieties.

A new type of Julie Mango that has much better production and decease resistance than the original Julie mango, so much loved by people in Jamaica and Trinidad. Super Julie is a more vigorous and hardy tree but still can be grown in a container. It is an excellent choice for those who really want the particular variety Julie (it has indeed a unique excellent taste!) but didn't have much luck with original Julie which is cold sensitive and difficult to grow. Super Julie is an answer for all Julie lovers!

Mansoa alliacea (Cydista aequinoctialis) - Garlic Vine. This is one of the most rewarding flowering vines that you can grow, unless that you are a vampire. Interestingly enough crushed leaves smell like garlic. It is one of the most wanter winter-flowering vines. When in full bloom, it looks like a cascade of blue-purple over a fence or trellis. Deep lavender flowers with white throat fading to a paler lavender within a few days, and you can see all three colors on the plant at the same time. Winter-Spring bloomer, it will also have some flowers on and off throughout the year. The vine has moderate growth rate and can stay compact in a pot as a specimen, and even can be grown as a house plant. It can tolerate some light frost.

It grows rapidly even in cool areas (hardy zones 9-10). The sweet, thin-skinned bananas mature very quickly, even when the flower appears somewhat late in the season. In addition, because it's a dwarf, it makes a great container banana. It is drought resistant and vigorous.

Photinia Red Tip

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

This relative of a Rose receives its name from the fact that young leaves are red, gradually changing to a dark green as they mature. It also has bunshes of pretty white flowers attracting bees and butterflies. The leaves are the starring feature of this plant. Each new leaf that unfurls is a bright shade of red or bronze, but they gradually become a solid dark green as they mature. By continually trimming the ends of the shoots, the plant is stimulated to keep producing new leaves throughout the year.
Photinias are very popular ornamental shrubs, grown for their fruit and foliage. Numerous hybrids and cultivars are available; several of the cultivars are selected for their strikingly bright red young leaves in spring and summer. The natural range of these species is restricted to warm temperate Asia, from the Himalaya east to Japan and south to India and Thailand.

Root Beer Plant, Acuyo, False Kava-Kava. Close relative of Piper methysticum (Kava-Kava), and Piper nigrum (Black Pepper), this herb originated from Tropical America and grows also in the South Pacific. Large-leaved perennial, known for its leaves, which are used for their spicy aromatic scent and flavor, some liken to root beer, others to anise-clove. This species is easily identified by its huge leaves which can grow over a foot long in older specimens. The leaves are chopped and used for flavoring, as well as used whole, as wrappings for meats, tamales, etc. P. auritum is very often confused with Piper methysticum (Kava-Kava), and probably has some similar effects.

In Africa, it is a favorite food for both Elephants and Rhinoceros, and is grown in farms for feeding both animals and people. The foliage when eaten raw, steamed, lightly boiled, or especially stir-fried, is not only delicious but actually very nutritious, containing more beneficial Beta 3 fatty acids than most fish.

The tree is very compact and fruits on and off year-round and may begin fruiting at a young age. The more sun and warmth they receive, the more fruit they will produce. Tikal is an early bloomer and it makes a fine subject for containers where it can be easily maintained between 6 - 8 ft tall. Pomegranate - var. Vietnam. Evergreen variety, heavy producer, large fruit, everbearing. According to Asian legend, the Pomegranate was the 'tree of life' in the Garden of Eden. The tiny beads of fruit, full of precious oil and juice, are brilliant as drops of blood or rubies. These "drops of blood" from the pomegranate will help to build healthy red blood cells. The fruit have been consumed by man since before recorded history. There is a saying in Hindi: One pomegranate can serve one hundred sick people. It is a good antioxidant, enriches blood (red blood cells count, haemoglobin), good for heart and blood circulation. The beautiful flowers occur for several months. Cold hardy to 15F, drought-, salt- and poor-soil-tolerant, pomegranates are grown as dense shrubs, popular container plants and bonsai.

It is frequently recommended for potatoes and suitable for vegetables fried in olive oil.

We obtained this plant in 2016, it was grown from the seeds brought to us from the plant in St. Catherines Monastery.
Holy Bramble, Burning Bush of the Bible. Rubus sanctus is a symbol of God revealing himself to man. An instance of it can be found at the Chapel of the Burning Bush on Mount Sinai, where it is revered as the original burning bush of the Bible. This longevity and location lead to its Latin name. Derivation of the botanical name: Rubus - latin name for Blackberry, Raspberry; Sanctus - sacred.
Rubus sanctus is a very long lived fruit shrub. The plant has no central stem; instead it produces long thin branches which can reach 5-6 feet in length. Branches have spiked thorns that bend downward. The flowers vary from pale to dark pink, followed by blackberries.
The nature of the burning bush is a source of debate among botanists and Biblical scholars. Some believe that the burning bush was not a bush, but a figurative representation of a supernatural phenomenon. Others contend that God spoke through a natural bush. In the entire Old Testament nowhere does God reveal more about himself to one man than in the passage of the burning bush. In fact, this passage is sometimes called the Mosaic revelation of God about himself. The St. Catherines Monastery spiritual heart is the Chapel of the Burning Bush, an unassuming structure of tremendous religious significance. According the oldest monastic tradition, this chapel sits atop the roots of the same Biblical bush "that burned with fire, and was not consumed" (Exodus 3:2) when God spoke to Moses for the first time. Today, it is very large in size, and many monks and scholars agree that the bush's presence is the very reason St. Catherine's Monastery developed in the first place.

Mexican petunia Compact Pink. A spectacular dwarf variety of this easy to grow, a heat-tolerant perennial is loaded with light pink flowers throughout the warm season. The large, petunia-like blooms are backed by dense clumps of narrow, dark green foliage. Quickly fills in as a ground cover.
Dwarf ruellia plants never get over 1 ft tall and the flowers are bunched right in with the leaves on very short stems. Although the blossoms each last only one day, there are usually plenty of buds forming so that there is a succession of new blooms over long periods. The leaves of this ruellia are dark green and very slender. The flower resembles a Petunia in form. As with the other ruellias, this flower does well under quite a variety of conditions, including full sun to shade, as well as dry to damp. They are rather cold-tender and can sometimes be killed by a very hard freeze, but most of the time they come back from the roots.
