Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeKeep soil moistWhite/off-white flowersOrnamental foliageFlood tolerant

Venus Fly Trap is a small herbaceous wetland plant characterized by unique hinged clamshell-like traps that spring closed to catch unwary insects. Rosettes of reclining leaves, each leaf consists of a relatively broad petiole (leaf stem) and a leaf blade which is modified into the trap. The perennial Venus flytrap blooms in May and June with white, five-petaled blossoms which are held a few inches above the foliage. Caring for Venus flytrap in cultivation is not too difficult, and they require no major difference to general Carnivorous Plants care. Keep the planting medium constantly moist. During the winter, keep it just barely moist.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Dombeya seminole - Tropical Rose Hydrangea

Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

One of the showiest landscape plants! It is a real showstopper, and a bonus of this already great shrub is that it will also do well in a container. And a happy surprise - it also serves as nectar plant to a large number of butterflies.
This winter bloomer puts on one of the best flower shows of any shrub here in Florida. It is sometimes called the tropical hydrangea because its flowers are similar to the hydrangeas we know from up North. The flowers are pink to rose color and bloom from fall to spring. That means it's blooming all winter in Naples during season, when the most color is desired and appreciated. Dombeya Seminole is a large shrub that grows 7 feet tall and about the same in width. It can be kept to about 5 feet tall with pruning.
This shrub will grow in full sun to partial shade and will tolerate poor soil. The more sun, the fuller the shrub, and that also encourages the maximum number of flowers. It is also fairly drought-tolerant once established.

Chilean Bellflower, Copihue. The national flower of Chile. The long-lasting, waxen blooms are very heavy in texture, and are bright watermelon red, heavily overlayed with a darker netting - sometimes giving the flowers a checkered appearance, though all shades from white through pink, apricot and dark red are also popular, though lesser known in cultivation. The vines are laden with leathery, evergreen foliage and may attain heights of 10-feet or more, with an equal spread; blooming profusely late summer through fall. In their homeland, they are cut and sold in bunches along the roadside and at markets. The fruits, sweet and tender, are called 'cucumbers', are edible and have a most agreeable flavor. Propagation from seed; stratify if sowing indoors. Seed does not store well; sow as soon as possible.

Ligustrum Jack Frost is a very striking evergreen shrub that makes a wonderful hedge and looks equally as nice all by itself as an accent planting. Shiny, leathery green leaves have creamy white edges, providing an excellent contrast to any landscape. In late spring and early summer, it puts out clusters of small, white flowers very similar to those of its ancestor, the Japanese Privet. Following the spring bloom, berries persist through the summer and attract birds. Moderate growth, takes either full sun or part shade. A very versatile landscape plant for hedges, foundation plantings, topiary or screens. Hard to beat for adding form, adaptability and color contrast to the landscape. It is disease resistant and grows well in a wide variety of soil types and climates. With a full and upright form, it makes an ideal mid-size hedge but is extremely versatile and can also be planted by itself as an accent and foundation planting. Mature specimen tend to take on a more golden yellow color as the leaves mature. It adds bulk to the landscape when desired while adding great color to the landscape. Pruning is recommended 2-3 times per year to maintain desired shape.
