Persea americana - Avocado Wurtz, Dwarf, Large size, Grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Avocado Wurtz is dwarf hybrid. It is very compact and slow growing, reaching only about 10-15 feet at maturity. Great for dooryard or container growing. The tree can handle temperatures to 25(F) degrees. Fruit is thin-skinned, 10-12 oz. The seed is small and fruit skin is smooth.
Fruits ripen green from May to September. The flavor is very good. Production is good and it is a consistent bearer.
See avocado varieties chart.
7 gal pot. This plant is grown in 7 gal pot, more mature than our standard size plants in 3 gal, has a more developed root system, and most of the time thicker trunk and more branches. However actual plant size may vary depending on the growing season and on variety. Dwarf varieties are slow growers and may be shorter trees than upright varieties. See a picture showing the relative size of plants grown in 3 gal and 7 gal.
You may contact us if tree height matters to you and we will provide you with more exact plant size we have in stock at the time. 7 gal plants may be shipped separately from other items by Ground service due to its large size. See here time in transit (business days, excluding Sat-Sun!)

Mamey sapote cultivar Key West (Pantin) originates in Florida. It produces medium size fruit (15-40 oz, mid-late season. Flesh is pink to red, fiberless, excellent quality, contains 1 seed. The tree is tall. Ripening season - late summer.
A unique fruit with an interior texture that is both creamy and sweet, the vibrant salmon-colored flesh of the Pantin mamey sapote is unlike anything most people have ever tasted. The flavor is a combination of sweet potato and pumpkin with undertones of almond, chocolate, honey, and vanilla. The ovoid, medium-large fruit has a large center pit, similar to an avocado. This superior mamey sapote cultivar was discovered growing near a fire station in Key West, Florida. The seeds of this tree were believed to come from Cuba by way of 19th century dissidents who left the island at that time. The tree was originally called the Key West mamey sapote until it was selected and propagated by Eugenio Pantin in the early 1950s. The story goes that a Cuban émegré named Josefina Jimenez smuggled three mamey seeds into the US in her brassiere and gave them to Pantin, who grew them as seedling rootstocks, onto which he grafted

After his death in 1963, Eugenio’s son, Donald, took over the family business, and nurseryman, Lawrence Zill, who had recognized the potential of Eugenio’s prized cultivar, named it the Pantin mamey sapote.
Today, Pantin represents about 95 percent of the mamey sapotes produced on some 350 acres under cultivation in southern Florida.

Pomegranate - var. Angel Red, the biggest fruit!
According to Asian legend, the Pomegranate was the 'tree of life' in the Garden of Eden. The tiny beads of fruit, full of precious oil and juice, are brilliant as drops of blood or rubies. These "drops of blood" from the pomegranate will help to build healthy red blood cells. The fruit have been consumed by man since before recorded history. There is a saying in Hindi: One pomegranate can serve one hundred sick people. It is a good antioxidant, enriches blood (red blood cells count, haemoglobin), good for heart and blood circulation. The beautiful flowers occur for several months. Cold hardy to 15F, drought-, salt- and poor-soil-tolerant, pomegranates are grown as dense shrubs, popular container plants and bonsai.

Stapelia gigantea - Starfish Flower

Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunModerate waterUnusual colorAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Starfish Flower, Giant Toad Flower, Carrion Flower. This is one of the largest flowers in the plant world! Great container plant, Stapelia gigantea, commonly called carrion flower, is a spine-free succulent member of the milkweed (not cactus!) family that is native to dry desert areas from Tanzania to South Africa. The common name comes from the malodorous flower aroma which resembles the smell of rotting meat. For those willing to look the other way on flower aroma, additional common names include giant toad flower or starfish flower. The focal point of this plant is the fleshy, 5-pointed, star-shaped flowers (to 10-16" across), each being pale ochre-yellow with thin transverse maroon lines. Flowers bloom in fall (flower buds are triggered by shortened daylight hours in fall). Flowers are pollinated by flies which reportedly find the carrion aroma irresistible. Spineless, 4-angled, succulent stems grow upright to 8-12" tall before scrambling sideways with the tips still erect. Plants in the ground may grow to 24" wide. Seed pods resemble milkweed and each individual seed has a milkweed-like parachute. Genus name honors Dutch physician Johannes Bodaeus van Stapel (1602-1636).

Succulent Care. Plant it in well-drained soil mix, water once and keep in warm (75-80F) place in filtered light. Do not water again until soil dries on surface.

Origin: Tropical West Africa. A curious flower! Wild and unusual floral display arrives from late spring to fall on this shrubby vine. Clusters of cream-colored flowers bedecked with long, curly streamers and a rust-tinted throat. Occurring off-and-on throughout the year, flowering is heaviest in spring and summer. The faintly fragrant flowers are short trumpets with five curled petals that are very light pink (aging to creamy light yellow) with a reddish brown base. The tips of the petals become narrowed and elongated, forming a twisting, sticky string that dangles down from the flower and touches lower leaves. During winter might drop leaves.
