What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Also called: Phimsen Mun. This is extremely productive mango.
If you like green mangoes, you will love this one! As with many Thai mangoes, this variety must be eaten green to fully enjoy its unique apple-like qualities. It has a crunchy, crisp texture with a pleasantly tart taste. Pick when the fruit are full-sized and green, before they ripen. For the truly different taste, try the fruit with salt and Cayenne pepper.
It can also be eaten ripe, has sweet juicy pulp and great flavor.

Improved version of Nam Doc Mai variety, this hybrid Brahm Kai Meu (sometimes spelled as Brahm Kai Mai) from Thailand, has excellent quality. The fruit is very similar to popular Nam Doc Mai, but even better. It can be eaten green (sweet and crispy!) or ripe (when turns yellow color). This variety is hard to find and very much sought after. The tree is also semi-dwarf, has compact nature and is a great choice for small yards.
This variety is semi-dwarf and great for pot culture. Green to yellow skin, no fiber whatsoever, multiple crops possible.
