Mangifera indica - Glenn Mango, Grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Big tree > 20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This Indian / Indo-Chinese hybrid fruits consistently every year. It is a Haden seedling, and much like the Haden it is a Florida favorite. It has a very attractive appearance with a mild, sweet flavor. The fruit is virtually fiberless. Excellent eating quality, consistent production, and effortless to grow. It is easy to determine when to pick because the fruit will turn yellow at its base. Relatively cold hardy variety.

Graham is a descendant of Julie selected in Trinidad. he tree is naturally compact, and with annual pruning perfect for the space-limited backyard or container culture. The fruit are oval, with a flattened base and a rounded apex, ranging in weight from 16 to 29 oz, with an average of 13 lb. The stem is petite and set in a shallow depression, reminiscent of Julie. The fruit ripen from mid-July to August to a bright yellow, rarely with a slight pink blush. The skin is thick and tough and tolerant of rough handling. The flesh is completely fiberless, deep orange, soft and juicy with a sweet, rich and aromatic flavor. During the late summer, a finer-flavored mango would be hard to locate. Graham is similar to Julie, both in its growth habit, and fruit shape. The tree, however, grows better in moist, humid conditions, typical in South Florida. The tree is compact, and with annual pruning can be maintained with a size and spread of 8 ft or less, perfect for the space-limited homeowner. The fruit are larger than Julie and fruiting is more dependable. There will be less headaches in growing a Graham and more time eating this fruit.

This variety is well-known because it originated in Florida and has been grown here since 1910. It has a good flavor, however, it is slightly fibrous and is succeptable to fungus. If you insist on "old haden" variety, this is it. The flesh has a full sweet flavor, and it is of good eating quality. The fruit is eye catching having a deep yellow base with a crimson blush.

Very rare, Exotic mango variety from Vietnam. Spellings: Hoaloc, Cat Hoa Loc, Haoloica. Fiberless, oval yellow, very thin seed. Very rare, collectable variety.
Among Vietnamese mango cultivars, Cat Hoa Loc is the most popular cultivar because of good appearance, texture, taste and flavour. Its production ranks the first among commercial mango cultivars in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Government supports the expanding of the production area for Cat Hoa Loc mango. At the mature green stage, Cat Hoa Loc mango fruits usually turn to full ripening within 4-5 days thereby limiting distribution and marketing options.

Honey Kiss mango referred to as honey kiss, due to its rich, thick honey tones. This mango is a yellow/green color outside with a little red blush to it. It has a fibreless flesh which is a deep orange tone, somewhat reminiscent of the golden color of pure honey. This variety can also be container grown as a condo or patio mango tree if you live in a colder climate or if you wish to keep the plant to a more compact size. Late season tree. It will fruit in clusters much of the time and is a heavy, reliable, bearer.

Imam Pasand is one of the best mangoes of India. Desert mango, oval shape, green outside, no fiber, white flesh, very distinctive taste like asian pear, no fiber, picked up unripe and let sit like Kent. Ideally suited for dessert, the table and show. The fruit weigh 16 oz or more and are a beautiful smooth oval at maturity. The skin is a dark green, with distinct white highlights over the entire surface. Upon ripening the fruit can attain a deep yellow blush the shoulders and mid-section. The tree has a trailing growth habit and is easily controlled by annual pruning. The properly pruned tree will have a full, spreading canopy of 8 to 10 ft in height and spread. During the fruiting season of June and July, Imam Pasand hangs heavy with consistent production. The fruit should be harvested mature green and ripened off the tree at a temperature of 75 to 85 F. Harvesting should occur 2 to 4 weeks before ripening on the tree for the development of the best quality. Properly harvested and ripened fruit have a fiberless, silky flesh with a deep, sweet flavor and distinct citrus overtones. The tree and fruit are tolerant of diseases and require little in the way of special care.
