Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Also called "First Love" (sometimes misspelled as YAshioka), this cultivar is one of the darkest green of all gardenias, it has a 3 to 5 inch bloom so perfect, it looks artificial. It was developed by Tadaoki Yoshioka while he lived in Hawaii, and he later brought it to Florida when he moved to Ft. Lauderdale with his family in 1954. The gardenia was named after his daughter, Aimee (Aimee Hironaka), who died in a plane crash in Dallas on August 2, 1985 (Delta Flight 191). Aimee gardenia grows openly and upright and blooms twice a year and slightly later than others. Flower Size 3 - 5".

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersYellow/orange flowersFragrant

Very rare Thai endemic plant. It has yellow/golden fragrant flowers similar to Gardenia tubifera kula except that it has erect flower (never pendulus), less number of petals and leaves are slightly velvetish. This gardenia is better suited for alkaline soils (S. Florida) than G. tubifera kula and more cold hardy - during record freeze in 2010 all G. tubifera were damaged or killed at 32F. Gardenia gjellerupii survived without any damages.

Gardenia nitida - Shooting Star Gardenia (clustered flowers)

Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Rare gardenia from Africa with. Blooms sporadically year round. Covered with flowers when in bloom. Strong fragrance, unusually shaped leaves. There has been a long discussion regarding proper classification of Gardenia nitida and (or?) posoqueria. In some sources, they are considered synonyms. Both species have highly star-like tubular flowers with nearly intoxicating scent.
Gardenia nitida and posoqueria seem to be 2 different varieties. G. nitida is the most common kind, with slightly smaller leaves, and flowers coming in clusters. G. posoqueria has longer single flowers, and leaves are much larger, lush and elongated.

White Ginger, Butterfly Ginger Lily. This is the most fragrant of all gingers. In the summer it bears fragrant flowers that resemble butterflies. It is popular in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands were it is used in leis or singly worn in the hair or behind the ear. It also makes a good cut flower great for scenting the home. It is a tough plant, a light freeze will kill it to the ground, but it will come back in the spring.
