Passiflora nitida (Bell Apple) is a tasty, but relatively unknown passion fruit native to the Amazon jungle region. This is a rare, really delicious fruit which is much sweeter than any passion fruit. It grows in the tropical lowlands from Costa Rica in the north and French Guiana in the northeast, through wide parts of Brazil. It is similar to P. laurifolia, with orange-yellow fruits that have a sweet, succulent pulp. It is a fast-growing tropical vine. Its flowers are blue and red, a bit like P. laurifolia and P. quadrangularis. The fruits grow up to 2 in. It is tropical and should be protected from frost. The fruits are eaten fresh and very sweet, with no acid, yet very good in flavor. Passiflora nitida is also a useful fruit in a drink called Purple Passion.

The fruits, when open, show 1 or 2 black seeds partially covered by white aril, resembling eyes. What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Avocado Bacon. A large Mexican variety with dark-skinned medium sized fruits, and a rich creamy flavor. It is very cold hardy, late-producing variety of Avocado tree with exceptional fruit.
Bacon Avocado is named after James Bacon, who developed it in 1954. It’s a highly productive Avocado tree with a lovely upright and spreading habit. Its dark green, glossy leaves lend an attractive, tropical appeal to the 15-20 feet of height, so you won’t want to miss having one of these in your yard.
The outstanding feature of the Bacon Avocado is its fruit. The oval fruits ripen in late fall and into spring. The fruits are easy to peel and have a light, subtle flavor that compliments almost any dish. Another outstanding feature of the Bacon avocado tree is its angelic sweeping branches which helps keep the tree shorter and easier to pick its fruit.

7 gal pot. This plant is grown in 7 gal pot, more mature than our standard size plants in 3 gal, has a more developed root system, and most of the time thicker trunk and more branches. However actual plant size may vary depending on the growing season and on variety. Dwarf varieties are slow growers and may be shorter trees than upright varieties. The Story says: "Catalina is an amazing avocado floated across from Cuba, 60 years ago just before Fidel Castro took over the Island Nation. Wise Cubans jumped into the ocean to escape the Castro regime and tossed in some favorite scions for us to enjoy here in the States. We owe a great debt to poor old Don Miguel Cruz de la Santa Maria Espinoza Sanchez Alvarez Jr. who sadly was lost at sea. His amazing scion wood, wrapped in cellophane and aluminum foil floated over, washing a shore on Miami Beach. His shiny little package was miraculously picked up on the shoreline and immediately grafted

The Ettinger avocado is a Type B avocado. Ettinger avocados are similar to Fuerte avocados, pear-shaped with smooth, thin, bright green skin, which does not peel easily, and pale green flesh. Ettinger avocados have a mild flavor. The Ettinger avocado tree is very vigorous, and as a heavy bearer of fruit it is often the most profitable variety of many orchards. The tree has an upright growing habit with little spreading. Mid-fall through early winter harvest time.
See avocado varieties chart.

Fantastic. Very cold hardy variety, supposedly the most most cold hardy of all avocados. Produces green, paper thin skin. The fruit has a creamy texture.
It survived temperatures around 10F near San Antonio, Texas (Zone 8b). Can take temperatures down to 15F for short period of time without significant damage.
See about successful growing in cold climate.

The Hass (Haas) avocado is dark-colored with a rough and bumpy skin. Will turn black when ripe while other varieties remain green.
See avocado varieties chart. This is Florida Hass variety, which does well in hot and humid climate, unlike California Hass, which prefers dry climate
