What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Big tree > 20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This variety is well-known because it originated in Florida and has been grown here since 1910. It has a good flavor, however, it is slightly fibrous and is succeptable to fungus. If you insist on "old haden" variety, this is it. The flesh has a full sweet flavor, and it is of good eating quality. The fruit is eye catching having a deep yellow base with a crimson blush. The tree is a vigorous large grower with an open rounded canopy. Relatively cold hardy variety. See more info about Mango varieties.

Very rare, Exotic mango variety from Vietnam. Spellings: Hoaloc, Cat Hoa Loc, Haoloica. Fiberless, oval yellow, very thin seed. Very rare, collectable variety.
Among Vietnamese mango cultivars, Cat Hoa Loc is the most popular cultivar because of good appearance, texture, taste and flavour. Its production ranks the first among commercial mango cultivars in Vietnam. The Vietnamese Government supports the expanding of the production area for Cat Hoa Loc mango. At the mature green stage, Cat Hoa Loc mango fruits usually turn to full ripening within 4-5 days thereby limiting distribution and marketing options.

Honey Kiss mango referred to as honey kiss, due to its rich, thick honey tones. This mango is a yellow/green color outside with a little red blush to it. It has a fibreless flesh which is a deep orange tone, somewhat reminiscent of the golden color of pure honey. This variety can also be container grown as a condo or patio mango tree if you live in a colder climate or if you wish to keep the plant to a more compact size. Late season tree. It will fruit in clusters much of the time and is a heavy, reliable, bearer.

This mango is a cross of a Kent and Bombay and inherited the finest features of each variety: the large size and gorgeous yellow/red color of the Kent; and the excellent, exotic flavor of the Bombay. 'Jakarta' is a virtually fiberless selection of good eating quality and consistent production. When fully ripe the skin will turn deep orange to red and display numerous white dots. Consistent producer. To determine when to pick, look for yellowing on lower half of fruit. Relatively cold hardy variety. See more info about Mango varieties.

Juicy Peach is a seedling from Tommy Atkins, and same as its parent, bears heavily and consistently. However the fruit is smaller and shaped differently, and most important - it does not have the fiber of Tommy Atkins! It does have a peachy citrusy flavor.

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterEdibleUltra tropical, min. temperature 55FSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This variety is a perfect choice for those with a small yard because it is a very compact, dwarf tree. This is the most popular variety in Jamaica and many other Caribbean islands because of its rich, sweet, coconut/pineapple-like flavor. To fully enjoy this unique tasting mango, it is best to eat on the same, or next day after it falls from the tree before it gets too ripe. In Florida it is sought after for its dwarf growing habit. Florida's humidity makes this tree a challenge to grow, however. Fungus problems which lead to twig die back are common, making fungicide applications necessary for success. Kathy. This new Zill release is a sister of the Sweet Tart variety, and it lives up to the family name. A nice tree with good disease resistance that produces an exceptional tasting fiberless mangos. Complex sweetness with hints of vanilla and just enough tartness to form a well balanced delight. It has an extended season, so you can expect there fruits anywhere from June-September. Its yellow amber skin, and consistent growth make the tree almost as valuable as the fruit.

By far, this is the best all-around late mango. It is very productive, good-flavored, excellent for shipping, and disease resistant. It also has a very long and late season. The largest fruit mature in late July, and the smallest fruit can be left on the tree as late as November. Fruit ripe more evenly when picked green, starting with the largest fruit. Good variety for eating while green and to use for making Indian green mango pickle (achar). The variety has become one of the world's most outstanding mangos. Excellent eating quality, disease resistance, productivity, and ripening time are some of the features of this four to five pound goliath.
