Musa - Banana Dwarf Brazilian (Santa Catarina Silver)

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This is very similar to the larger Brazilian but much shorter. Its sweet bananas are also smaller than that of the Brazilian. It should be grown more widely as it has good wind resistance and very tasty fruit. Its smaller stature makes it more suited to small gardens, greenhouses and large containers. This banana-cultivar was imported from Brazil in 1979 and is a dwarf mutant form of Brazilian known as Santa Catarina Silver or Santa Catarina Plata. It fruits between 7.5 ft to 9 ft. It has a strong thick pseudo stem and a strong root system. Leaves tend to be quite leathery and tough. It has shown good wind tolerance in storms up to 50 mph. It has a tendency to hold its leaves tight with short petioles. Fruit quality is considered one of the best. It is cold tolerant, and resistant to all diseases. Fruit will ripen on the plant without splitting. One can harvest by shaking the plant and having the ripe bananas fall down.

It grows rapidly even in cool areas (hardy zones 9-10). The sweet, thin-skinned bananas mature very quickly, even when the flower appears somewhat late in the season. In addition, because it's a dwarf, it makes a great container banana. It is drought resistant and vigorous.

Musa arunachalensis - seeds

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

The newly discovered species, named Musa arunachalensis, belongs to the subgenus Rhodochlamys.
Rhodochlamys bananas are characterized by having erect or drooping inflorescences with fruit pointing towards the apex of the inflorescence. Most of them have relatively few fruits and are best known for their brightly colored bracts (small leaf at the base of a flower), a feature that makes them popular as ornamental plants.
Musa arunachalensis is known from specimens found in West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh, northeastern India. This species flowers and fruits from January to May and differs from other Musa species in the nature of its inflorescence. The color of the bract is reddish orange with a yellow tip.
Banana sowing instructions: Abrade a side of each seed with a sand paper, then soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing 1/2" deep in a potting mix. Keep warm, between 70 and 85F and in a bright light. Germination can be erratic, usually taking between 2 to 12 months, sometimes longer, so do not discard the seed pots.

This variety has much darker ornamental stems when mature and with its dark green leaves plus fast growth rate it makes an excellent ornamental from seed. It produces large fruits but these are full of seeds so inedible. Quite a tall plant to 18ft but can be cut back to over winter under glass. Quite a tough banana possibly as hardy at the root level as Musa skkimensis if the root crown is protected.

Musa paradisiaca - Variegated Banana Ae-Ae

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterOrnamental foliageEdible

First found in Hawaii, Ae-Ae is a very rare collectible Banana and yet it is fruiting year round! It has green and white variegated foliage and the peel on the fruit is also variegated. Flowering and fruiting of bananas occur year-round where they are hardy outdoors. The beautiful coloring of the variegated leaves and bananas makes it very desirable. It is a beautiful banana, they say there is a reason it is only for the elite in society...
It likes slightly acid soil for the leaves to have good variegation. It may flower and fruit at any season of the year. Prefers full sun, but in hot areas should be protected from burning sun especially before stablished. It does not travel well and for a pup to be viable, it has to be fairly large. In areas with too hot and too bright sun, it may not do well in full sun, and dry conditions scorch them. It can be grown in a container as a specimen. Musa AeAe is hard to find, and very expensive plant. Keep in mind, it is not easy to grow!

RECOMMENDED FERTILIZERS:
SUNSHINE Robusta - Rapid Growth Booster
Tropical Allure - Smart-Release Booster

Musa thompsonii - seeds

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Musa thompsonii is a subtropical species native to the Himalayas in Bhutan and northeastern India. Its pseudostems can reach a height of up to 15 ft. However, young plants can easily be grown in containers and kept small by cutting back overgrown stems. Young plants of Musa thomsonii are extremely attractive having a slender, graceful habit. The pseudostems and long leaf stalks are heavily waxy and contrast well with the emerging leaves which are uniformly stained red below. The upper surface of the leaf is plain green, somewhat glossy and with blue or purple tones in the midrib channel. Not the fastest grower, Musa thomsonii is thought to be a low altitude plant, so is not likely to be particularly cold tolerant, but doesn't mind cool nights. The seedy fruit of Musa thomsonii is reported to have sweet flesh but the hard seeds would have to be removed, a rather laborious process, in order to render the flesh palatable.
