Adenium hybrids - many varieties, Grafted

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Toothache Plant is a medicinal herb that has been used for generations to manage the pain of toothaches. Both the leaves and the attractive golden flowers can be used as a natural anesthetic. Simply chew the leaves or flowers for a few seconds then you will experience a tingling and numbing sensation in your mouth. Cooked leaves lose their strong flavor and may be used as leafy greens. Both fresh and cooked leaves are used in dishes such as stews in northern Brazil. Flavor is described as having an odor of citrus, herbal, tropical or musty odor, and its taste can be pungent, cooling, tingling, numbing, or effervescent. Acmella Oleracea extract is considered a natural alternative to Botox. Applied topically, Acmella Oleracea reportedly reduces muscle tension, reducing facial wrinkles caused by tense or contracted facial muscles.
The plant is a small, erect, it grows quickly and bears gold and red inflorescences. It is frost-sensitive but perennial in warmer climates. Can be grown in a container and as a houseplant.

Arundina graminifolia - Bamboo Orchid, Bird Orchid

Full sunShadeSemi-shadeEpiphyteRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowers

Bamboo ground orchid produces pinkish flowers at the top of tall cane-like pseudobulbs. It's the only species in the genus. The plants are quite tall; they'll reach at least hip level, possibly over your head, and their vegetative resemblance to bamboo can be uncanny. The long pseudobulbs have leaves alternating along their length, similar to Epidendrum orchids. The flower stems, which emerge from the top of the canes, produce several flowers sequentially, so that there will be one at a time over an extended period. The flowers are white with a purple-to-pink lip, and shaped similarly to a Cattleya orchid flower. They are 2-3 inches across, and can appear for much of the year, especially in summer.

Billbergia windii (nutans) - Bromeliad Queen of Tears, Friendship Plant

Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeEpiphytePink flowersUnusual colorOrnamental foliageAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Friendship Plant. This Bromeliad is one of the easiest to grow indoors, and one of the most striking. Its thick, strap-like leaves grow into an upright rosette, creating an urn that must be filled with water at all times. As the plant matures, the leaves arch outward, lending a graceful appearance. The foliage can reach up to 15 inches tall and about twice as wide, so give this plant some room to spread out. The flowers are pink, purple, yellow or green and are surrounded by red or pink bracts. One of its common names Queen's Tears comes from the drops of nectar that "weep" from the flowers when the plant is moved or touched. Because it readily produces offsets that can be shared with friends, it is also commonly known as Friendship Plant.
