Big tree > 20 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Pink Cedar, Balangi, Kurungatti - this tree is monospecific (only one in the genus) that is native to the mountain rainforests along the Himalayas. Very rare in plant collections. It is a fast growing large deciduous tree that can have a buttressed base with a straight trunk of a light gray colored bark and spreading horizontal stems that form a rounded crown. It has bipinnately compound leaves that are a bright reddish pink color when first emerging, then a pinkish yellow and finally a lime green color before maturing, giving the tree a multicolored look at the branch tips much of the spring and summer. In the early spring, just before or as the tree first leafs out, appear the many scarlet-red flowers in 3 to 6 inch long dense racemes near the branch tips, giving inflorescence a bit of a bottlebrush look.
Plant in full sun and irrigate deeply regularly to occasionally. Hardiness - it is tolerant to nighttime dips to at least 28F.

Adonidia merrilli variegata - Variegated Christmas Palm

Big tree > 20 ftFull sunRegular waterPalm or palm-likeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This is the extremely rare variegated version of the Christmas palm native to the Philippines. Incredibly easy to maintain this palm needs only a tropical environment and soil that isn't soggy to thrive. It is able to adapt to a wide variety of growing conditions including being moderately salt tolerant. It prefers a sunny spot but will handle some shade. Self cleaning, this neat and tidy pinnate palm has a short green crownshaft under a dozen or so recurved leaves atop a grey leaf scarred trunk that's slightly swollen at the base. Its red seeds mature in December around Christmas - hence the nickname. Unlike most variegated plants, this form comes 90% true to seed. Needs a good mixture of sun and shade to look its best.
Adonidia is a neat looking, compact palm that resembles a dwarf version of the Royal palm (Roystonea regia) which it matches in beauty. It grows to an overall height of only about 16 ft. By late fall fruit are beginning to ripen and by late December are bright and brilliant red - like ornaments on a Christmas palm! Small stature makes it perfect for use in small scale plantings. Good specimen container plant. The formal symmetry of Christmas palm is nicely showcased when it is grown in a container. Indoors or out this is a glamourous container plant that can maintain its looks despite hardship and neglect.

Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersUnusual colorOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Voodoo lily, Devils tongue, Snake Palm, Corpse flower. Amorphophallus bulbifer is one of the prettiest of the Voodoo Lilies and the inflorescence doesn't smell that bad compared to others of the genus. Amorphophallus only blooms when mature and even so it doesn't bloom every year. The unpleasant smell that the flower omits is only present for a few hours after the flower opens. If the flower is pollinated (normally by flies if the plant is outside) it will take 1 year for the plant to mature its seeds. The seed stalk is very pretty with the seeds changing colors from green to red. During this time the tuber will not produce a leaf.

Chinese Dwarf is a hedging clumping bamboo that grows to roughly 10 ft in height, but can get taller in good conditions - you simply hedge it to the size you want! It grows very differently from traditional bamboo, with a very bushy, tufting habit with its foliage and does not naturally show the culms. Chinese Dwarf has quite pretty, large green leaves and gives a very tropical feel instead of a normal hedge. Chinese Dwarf is an extremely fast growing, hardy bamboo, and can achieve a privacy hedge in under 18 months! You need to trim Chinese Dwarf down between 1-4 times a year to maintain at the ideal height and to promote new fresh foliage. Chinese Dwarf is definitely a fantastic privacy hedge, sound barrier and wind break. Hedge it down to any preferred height and even clean out the below foliage to create a japanese style effect. Chinese Dwarf can be grown in full sun to part shade. Trim back as much as you desire to maintain size and promote new foliage. Chinese Dwarf is a great option for pots or troughs.
