Sclerochiton harveyanus - Blue Lips, Mazabuka

Large shrub 5-10 ftGroundcover and low-growing 2ftSmall tree 10-20 ftShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterBlue/lavender/purple flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Mauve-blue, unusually lipped flowers are lightly lavender-fragrant! They create a pretty floral display on this shade-loving shrub with its attractive glossy green foliage. Flowers are mauve-blue to purple and the lower petals are ribbed, giving the impression of lips, hence the common name. Five fringed lobes, equal in size, short and rounded, are the flowers distinguishing feature. The numerous flowers produced in summer are attractive to pollinating insects which encourage insect-feeding birds into the garden.
Due to its fast-growing nature, suitability to shady conditions and unusual floral display this species has great horticultural value. It is best to grow it in a shaded to semishaded area of the garden.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

7 gal pot. This plant is grown in 7 gal pot, more mature than our standard size plants in 3 gal, has a more developed root system, and most of the time thicker trunk and more branches. However actual plant size may vary depending on the growing season and on variety. Dwarf varieties are slow growers and may be shorter trees than upright varieties. Vigorous full size plant with high yield and strong uniformity. Grown throughout Central Mexico, these papayas are 3 to 5 pounds in weight and the shape of an elongated melon. Their skin is green when unripe but turns yellow to orange with a few freckles once they become mature. They are wonderfully soft and juicy, and have a salmon pink or red flesh that is very sweet with a slightly perfumed, fruity flavor. Cut them in half lengthwise, scoop out the small, shiny, gelatinous black seeds from the center and discard them. Delicious and irresistible with a sprinkle of fresh lemon or lime juice.

If you have a Florida Sweet Bay, your cooking will have flavors folks outside Florida can never hope to duplicate. Florida Bay Laurel likes moist, acid soils. Artocarpus x integer (Jackfruit x Chempedak), Cheena cv. TopTropicals

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterEdible

This highly recommended variety has grown in TopTropicals garden from a seedling of Cheena (Jackfruit x Chempedak) that fruited within 3 years from planting. The fruit (20-25" size) is probably the best we ever tasted! It is super sweet, crunchy and has a rich, pleasant, excellent flavor. It has very little latex which makes it easy to handle when cutting up. The tree produces at the very base of the trunk, so you can prune it as short as you want. Our tree survived light frosts as well as 48 hours of 3ft flooding, with no damage!
Cheena is a natural hybrid between jackfruit and chempedak. The tree has an open, low and spreading growth habit and can be maintained at a height and spread of 8 ft with annual pruning. Cheena is a consistent producer. The fruit are up to 5 lbs, long, narrow and uniform in size and shape. The skin is green, with blunt spines that yellow and open slightly upon maturity.
Comes true from seed.

Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeEpiphyteRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Tillandsias, called by some the world's most unusual airplants, are a delightful addition to any greenhouse. They are easy to care for, exotic to look at, and interesting to study. Tillandsias are air plants, even more so than other bromeliads and much like vandaceous orchids. Tillandsia's are without doubt one of the worlds most amazing group of plants. Tillandsias have developed the ability to take all their food and water through specially designed cells on their leaves and therefore can exist without any roots for ever. Roots are used by most species to attach themselves and nothing more. Tillandsias can grow in places no other plants can survive including electrical cable on power lines. They prefer light airy conditions and daily misting in areas of low humidity. Enjoy your tillandsia plant for years of blooming and pupping with good light, fresh air, and adequate but not overabundant watering, particularly in cooler weather.
