Subtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Oldest cultivated fruit tree in the world. The lovely mango was cultivated in India 4,000 years ago, and the plant itself is impressive, with leafy green foliage. The fruit, delicious for breakfast or dessert, is yellow and red with black specks, and generally kidney-shaped. This tasty and nutritious fruit is becoming increasingly popular in the States. It grows in the tropics and warm subtropics. It will grow in poor soils and does not need a lot of water. Good production starts in 2 to 3 years with grafted trees, although grafted trees will flower and fruit the first year even when small. Wet or cool weather during bloom in the spring limits fruit set. Temperatures of 40F will damage mango blossoms. Mature trees may tolerate 25F for a few hours with leaf and small branch damage, but young trees may be killed at 29-30F. Trees in the tropics become large and stately like oaks. Warning: Some people react to the skin of mango fruit like they do to poison ivy. Varieties: Over 400 varieties. According to variety, tree can be large or small, producing early, mid or late season fruit. Much variation in color, flavor, and fiber content according to variety.

Condo mango. Alampur Baneshan originated in South India and is considered as one of the finest dessert mangoes in the country. The fruit are large, averaging 14 to 16 oz. They are oblique-oblong. The skin color is green, even when ripe, and is overlaid with characteristic corky dots covering the fruit surface. As with most other fine dessert mangoes of India, it is best harvested hard-green and ripened at room temperature. In this manner one can expect an exceptional, multi-leveled flavor, from the deep and resinous to the intensely sweet. This is a mango for the true connoisseur, not the beginner, as its flavor could prove to be overpowering to the unaccustomed palate. The fruit are uncommon outside of India and it is improbable that they will enter into international export markets.

Angie mango originated in South Florida. The flavor is classified in the Alphonso class of mangos with a deep sweetness and sophisticated profile rich in apricot. This variety is valuable due to its relatively small growth habit, rich and complex flavor, and good disease resistance. It was named after Angie Whitman, wife of Bill Whitman and a trustee of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Fruit is yellow to orange in color at maturity, and average about 1 lb. The fruit is oblong and saffron yellow with Indian orange blush on the sun-exposed shoulders. The skin is smooth and without visible lenticels. The flesh is tangerine orange and without fiber. The flavor is rich and sweet.
The trees are considered semi-dwarf and easy to manage through pruning. The disease tolerance is excellent and given its early season it often can be harvested before the rainy season in South Florida. The tree is semi-dwarf and highly manageable with annual pruning. Size can be maintained at or below 8 ft with consistent production.

This mango is very similar to the Haden, only better! It has the same flavor with the Haden, with less fiber. The fruit are also bigger and less prone to fungus problems. Pick when you see the base of the fruit turning yellow. Eat before fruit gets too ripe. Best cold tolerance.

Baptiste is a popular Haitian dessert mango. It is a mid-season fruit here in SW FL, but in its native climate it can fruit year round. It is a small, manageable tree which makes it a great choice for space limited gardeners. The fruit is around 14 ounces with a mottled yellow skin when ripe. It has a firm, sweet flesh which holds its shape in fruit salads and other desserts well.

Cac is a selection from Vietnam, where it was singled out for consistent yields, a beautiful appearance and superb eating quality. The fruit are ovate and are 18 oz with an uncommonly smooth skin. The fruit are greenish-yellow with a lemon yellow flesh with no fiber. The flavor is uncomplicated, blending the elements of citrus and peach with a gentle floral bouquet. The tree is vigorous, with an open and leggy growth habit that requires close attention to branch tipping and shaping. The fruit have good disease tolerance and ripen in the middle of the mango season.

Also known as the Miracle Mango. Fruit come in bunches. Medium size tree. It is a Thai mango that fruits in the winter and often fruits in the summer of the same year producing two crops annually. The fruit ripens from November-January and sometimes July as well. The fruit are typically 0.75-1.0 lbs and have a golden yellow skin when ripe. The pulp is sweet and firm and has a very distinctive coconut flavor. The trees are vigorous growers with a densely foliated canopy and upright habit. This variety is an excellent choice for winter residents, and growers that want to extend their mango season beyond the traditional summer months.

Cotton Candy. A new Zill release, this mango is turning out to be a champion. The original tree is a Keitt crossed with Gary. It is a late season mango, weighing around a pound with good disease resistance. The real advantage to this golden fruit is its incredible sweet taste. Cushman is an excellent mid to late season mango that resembles a grapefruit in size, shape, and color. The flesh is bright orange, smooth, creamy, somewhat pineapple-like flavor and completely fiberless. Although the tree is not the most aesthetically pleasing due to poor disease resistance, one bite will make you drop the axe. One of the best tasting fruit!
