This large feathery shade tree is very popular in Mexico. The legume pod is curled up and looks like an ear. The species name means fruit in a circle, referring to the oddly shaped pods of this species. This tree is the national tree of Costa Rica and El Salvador. This fast growing tree reaches heights of 100 feet with a spread of 70 feet or more. The trunk is brown with many stems. The bipinnate leaves have 20 to 30 pairs of leaflets. The small white flowers are formed on green pompoms. They are followed by a flattened, dark brown seedpod, curved into a circle about 3 to 6 inches long and resembling a strange ear. Most notably, the pods of this tree are used extensively as decoration and for crafts. The litter from the leaves is used for animal fodder.

I purchased a new house in Sept of 2017 and this tree is in our backyard. At first, I thought it was a dying tree because there were no leaves on it but in January it started developing these ear shape pods. Now our tree is green and beautiful. I always wondered what kind of tree it was (now I know!) because in the 26 years I've lived in FL I have never seen a tree look bare like the trees do in NY.

Hi..I am not looking to purchase a tree or plant one....what I am looking for is the actual seed pod....it is like a rattle..I had one, but gifted it to someone who really liked it! I wish to replace mine :) Any way we could purchase maybe 6? If they are dried, all the better....

Any help with this would be appreciate!

Thank you for your time...

I have a large ear tree that covers my whole front yard and is usually beautiful this time of yr. This year it's dropping all of the leaves and showering everything with sap. I'm concerned that the tree is not well.. Could you make a educated guess so I can
