Varieties: Queen, Montgomery. Season: July to September. American relative of the Lychee and Longan. Tall stately tree with smooth gray bark. Cold sensitive especially when young. Male and female flowers are usually born on separate trees but some are partly polygamous. Heavy fruit clusters with nearly round, green fruits tipped with a small protrusion. Pulp is yellowish to salmon colored, translucent, gelatinous, juicy but scant and somewhat fibrous and usually clinging tenaciously to the seed. Flesh is acid-sweet and very tasty. The Spanish lime has quite unusual leaves. You can eat the nut too. It is a very versatile tropical fruit. Relatively cold hardy, to upper 20's for short period.

Laurel- The nuts can be eaten w/o roasting. We eat the flesh and then crack open the seed and eat the nut. Perhaps its just a preference to roast it before eating it in T&T. I also believe there are a couple varieties of this plant. The ones I got as a child in Belize were rounder,fatter, and sweet with a slight tart taste; the spanish lime variety sold here in South Florida is more oblong and more tart than sweet.

I am from Trinidad and Tobago. You can't eat the nut outright. That is wrong information. I have been eating this fruit since I was a child. Our tree in Tobago is over 63 years old. The nuts are sometimes saved and roasted, then ground up and eaten for medicinal reasons.(namely, diarrhea)

Quenepas are so common in Puerto Rico that they simply grow wild, just about everywhere. I never knew you can actually eat the nut. If in Puerto Rico during the Quenepa season, any homeowner with a tree will "usually" give you a bunch or two for just asking.

The Spanish lime has quite unusual leaves and you can eat the nut so it is a very versital tropical fruit . Ed
