Ipomoea X multifida is a hybrid of garden origin between cypress-vine (Ipomoea quamoclit) and the related Scarlet Morning-glory (Ipomoea hederifolia). Use Cardinal climber to cover a trellis in a hurry. The lacy leaves and brilliant red flowers make a screen that you'd rather look at than through. Cardinal climber is an excellent source of nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. Light: Full sun to partial shade. Moisture: Needs well-drained soil. Tolerates drought, but grows best and produces the most flowers if well-watered. Propagation: By seeds. Cardinal climber will self-sow from seeds that remain in the ground over winter.

Ipomoea multifida is the synonym for Ipomoea sloteri ,which is the current International accepted legitimate botanical name.

Synonyms should NOT be used in place of current accepted names because several different legitimate species can share various types of synonyms but THERE IS ONLY ONE current legitimate accepted binomial and / or epithet.

Ipomoea sloteri did not hybridize by itself but was hybridized by Mr.Sloter through crossing 2 different species Ipomoea quamoclit and Ipomoea coccinea in the early 1900's.

The initial offspring was unstable and was named Ipomoea multifida and after several generations the new species became genetically stabilized as an auto-tetraploid and was renamed Ipomoea sloteri.

The origional unstable material known as Ipomoea multifida is not known to have been preserved other than in the more stable progeny as Ipomoea sloteri.
