Calotropis gigantea - Giant milkweed, Arka, Crown flower, close related to a well-known Butterfly Milkweed, but it is so impressively fat! Its beefy silver leaves add a great texture to your butterfly garden, and its lavender flowers are fascinating and beautiful. This plant is great for a butterfly garden as it is a host plant for the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly.

The shiny blue bee Xylocopa can also be seen visiting this flower. Although its blooms can be seen all through the year, its flowers are particularly abundant during summer season. The plant also has medicinal value. Its latex is used to remove thorns from the skin. The plant is hardy at least to zone 9 and drought tolerant.

Giant Milkweed can be used as a substitute for other milkweeds or as a supplement to the ones you already have. The best features of this plant:

- Constant blooms throughout the season when starting with mature plants

- Large, thick leaves can sustain more monarch caterpillars

- Caterpillars can pupate on the tree itself

- Great option for adventurous gardeners looking to try something new

- Grows well in dry and difficult soils

Hello,

I am interested in buying but it is not clear from the catalog if this is the white only flower or the other hues of purple/ blues? I am interested in the plant with pure white flowers.

Thanks,
Saurabh

I found this growing, of all places, in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona a few years ago. I though it was the usual Asclepias speciosa or A. syriaca but it turned out to be this species instead. It was growing in sand near a perennial stream in a forest of Walnut, Arizona Sycamore and some other more typical eastern species of tree's, shrubs, etc. The Chiricahua Mtns are known to have this kind of more 'eastern' woodland but it was still a surprise to find this plant growing there. I wonder if someone seeded them up there becuase they certainly are not native, obviously. I also found many different kinds of Ipomoea up in the Chiricahua's too. Some, I am sure have not even been discovered or listed yet. I have never seen them any where else. One of the Ipomoeas I found up there grew on rocky hillsides, had very arrowhead shaped leaves and vined itself all over the rocky hillsides at quite a high altitude. It has beautiful bright orange flowers with long tubes or throats. Some of the seedpods were ripe so I did collect a few and have them growing here now. I also collected the pods, not all of them though, off the Giant Milkweed/Calytropis that we found up there. It is definitely this species as I have grown it in my solarium and still do.
