The most beautiful orchid tree. The tree was originally described as a new species in 1908 after being discovered on the near Hong Kong around 1880 and was named after a Hong Kong governor Sir Henry Blake who had a strong interest in botany. The tree is of medium size with alternate large heart shaped leaves. Large deep-purple flowers appears from January to May. The beautiful display of slightly fragrant orchid-like blooms makes the tree so desirable for the landscape. The flowers attract butterflies and bees. The species is believed to be sterile and will not set seed so the plant will not drop long pods as other orchid trees do. The flower of Bauhinia blakeana was adopted as the emblem of Hong Kong in 1965.

Hong Kong Orchid tree (Bauhinia Blakeana) is generally sterile and does not set seeds except occasionally in it's native countries. It also does not drop leaves as much as other varieties of Bauhinia.Faint sweet smell wafts in air around tree which flowers in winters in South Florida. Application of Iron in summer helps keep tree healthy and green. Other varieties (B. Pupurea -the common purple/lilac type and the white variety B. Candida)do set seeds profusely. You can easily pull up young seedlings from garden where invasiveness is concerned. Young plants often flower in their 2nd year and plants do fine in containers for first few years. Transplanting in ground may be sometimes difficult. In Asian countries, young flower buds are boiled and eaten after seasoning-tasty. leaves are used as wrappers, book marker, compost etc.All varieties of Bauhinia flowers are considered sacred for offering in Temples. Hindi name (used in North India) is 'Kachnaar'.

This is a very beautiful tree. Gorgeous flowers with mild sweet scent that wafts in air.Flowers for several weeks from fall to early spring. No seeds in USA.I have read that it does set seeds in Asian countries but not as many as other varieties of orchid tree.
Some people get confused about the variety because there are several varieties of orchid tree (bauhinia)that seed and flowers look pretty much the same.My seeds germinated easily and flowered in pot in appx 18 month! This is a summer flowering variety and plants look ratty in winter and early spring because there were no leaves. I even thought they died untill leaves sprouted couple of weeks ago.
There is even a vine form of this plant that I saw growing in low mountains in India. The white flowered ones primarily.Vine form in wild looks very beautiful.

I read that this tree cannot be reproduced by it's seeds as it's flowers are sterile.

I visited the Japanese Gardens in San Antonio, TX where one of these was planted in the 30's by a Japanese man. My husband picked some of the seeds on the tree and I now have 6 little trees growing.

What's up with this?
