Origin: Haiti and Dominican Republic

Dwarf Chenille Plant gets its common name from the fuzzy plumes of tiny, foxtail-shaped bright red flowers that trail above a thick mound of small, serrated leaves. Given enough light, this plant blooms nearly year-round! The blossoms that begin as wispy buttons and elongate into fuzzy cones. At maturity, they become 3-4" long streamers.

A spectacular plant for a hanging basket, container or ground cover, it is heat tolerant, great for both hot Southern landscapes or as an easy houseplant, providing bright light.

Place this unusual house plant on a pedestal stand or pot it in a hanging basket to show off those eye-catching fuzzy blooms.

This is a dwarf plant that stays small and doesn't need pruning. It's naturally bushy, so you don't have to pinch its growing tips to get it to branch out.

A favorite with children, and cats too!

Cat Tail, Chenille Plant, Red Hot Cattail, Foxtail, Red Hot Poker
Origin: East Indies
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This plant needs a humid environment, and frequent watering during the summer growing season. A. hispida has plain, green leaves, but compensates by producing masses of long, bright red inflorescences that hang down and give rise to its popular name of "Cat's Tails". The brightly colored pendulous tassels are extremely showy. Acalypha species require full sun, well-drained soil, and careful pruning to prevent them from becoming leggy. .

Acrocarpus fraxinifolius, Pink Cedar, Balangi, Kurungatti

Click to see full-size image Acrocarpus fraxinifolius
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae
Pink Cedar, Balangi, Kurungatti
Origin: South Asia
Big tree > 20 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This tree is monospecific (only one in the genus) that is native to the mountain rainforests along the Himalayas. It is a fast growing large deciduous tree that can have a buttressed base with a straight trunk of a light gray colored bark and spreading horizontal stems that form a rounded crown. It has bipinnately compound leaves that are a bright reddish pink color when first emerging, then a pinkish yellow and finally a lime green color before maturing, giving the tree a multicolored look at the branch tips much of the spring and summer. In the early spring, just before or as the tree first leafs out, appear the many scarlet-red flowers in 3 to 6 inch long dense racemes near the branch tips, giving inflorescence a bit of a bottlebrush look.

Plant in full sun and irrigate deeply regularly to occasionally. Hardiness - it is tolerant to nighttime dips to at least 28° F. As the specific epithet implies, this plant looks similar to an Ash (in the genus Fraxinus) and other common names include Australian Ash, Indian Ash, Kenya Coffeeshade, Mundani, Red Cedar and Shingle Tree.

Native to Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand.
