A truly spectacular hanging heliconia, H.vellerigera is a solid orange-red color with brilliant white hairs. It is a medium sized heliconia, reaching 6-7 feet tall. The leaves are light purple on the underside. Blooms throughout the year. See Thai Heliconia - varieties Gallery.

Low, much branched, evergreen tree, to 15 m tall; buttresses at the base of the trunk and plank or ribbon type roots; bark pinkish gray, smooth becoming flaky when older; leaf blades dark green above and silvery white below, withering dull orange-yellow, oblong to elliptic, leathery; flowers in hanging yellowish tassels; fruits purple-brown, woody, shiny with a stiff keel on one side.
