 Coccoloba uvifera
Family: Polygonaceae
Sea grape
Origin: Tropical and sub-tropical America
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Sea Grape is now found growing wild along many seashores and is also used as an ornamental in gardens subjected to salty winds and drought. It has stiff, rounded platter-like leaves shading from yellowish to olive green with prominent veins. The flowers are inconspicuous but the long clusters of berry-like fruit which follow are striking and give the tree its popular name. Somewhat acid in taste, the fruit can be used to make jelly. Other members of the genus have even larger leaves and make attractive ornamental plants when grown in a glasshouse. Coccoloba prefers full sun. Pruning improves the shape when it is used in a garden landscape. It is both flood and drought tolerant.

Cocos nucifera, Coconut Palm, Coco-do-baia

Click to see full-size image Cocos nucifera
Family: Arecaceae / Palmae
Coconut Palm, Coco-do-baia
Origin: Jamaica, Malaya, Pacific islands
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunKeep soil moistPalm or palm-likeFlood tolerantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Flood tolerant. "Symbol of the tropics" often used as a houseplant. Fast growing palm proven to help clean indoor air of smoke and harmful chemicals. Bares coconuts 12 months a year for fresh coconut milk and copra (dried coconut). Varieties: Green Malayan (thin trunk), Mayton (thicker trunk, longer leaves, more hardy). This very tall palm tree is always an inviting symbol of the tropics. The plant is one of the most valuable plants to man. It is a primary source of food, drink, and shelter. In Sanskrit the coconut palm is called "kalpa vriksha", which is defined as "the tree which provides all the necessities of life." Man can use every part of the coconut. The white nut-meat can be eaten raw or shredded and dried and used in most cooking recipes. A single coconut has as much protein as a quarter pound of beefsteak. Copra, the dried meat of the kernels, when crushed is the source of coconut oil. The husks, known as coir, is a short, coarse, elastic fibers used to make an excellent thatch roofing material for houses. This very diverse plant is also an excellent charcoal, which is produced from the shells, not only does it work as a cooking fuel, but also in the production of gas masks and air filters. The outer part of the trunk of the coconut palm furnishes, a construction lumber, known as porcupine wood for houses and furniture. The swollen base of the trunk, when hollowed, can be turned into a hula drum that the Hawaiians use for entertainment. These are just a few examples of how extraordinary the coconut palm can be utilized.

 Colocasia esculenta
Family: Araceae
Black colocasia, Black Magic, Taro, Black Elephant Ear, Malanga Amarillo, Dasheen
Origin: South America
Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeBog or aquaticUnusual colorOrnamental foliageSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerant

Var. Black Runner: a superb Colocasia and a must for black plant fanatics. Large matt black, heart shaped leaves up to 20" long, on black/purple leaf stalks. As with most elephant ears, moist soil and high nutrition are the keys to great specimens. Grow in rich, fertile moisture retentive soil or as a pond marginal in full sun for darker leaves. Note that in shade leaves turn dark green. Once moved to bright sun, they turn back to black. In cooler subtropical climates leaves die back and the plant emerges from a rhizome in spring.

Var. Mojito: This new sport of Colocasia was discovered in Florida. Incredible contrasting blacks and greens adorn its leaves. This camouflage effect is matched with light green stems streaked with dark purple that fade up to pink, with chartreuse highlights mixed in to create a totally wild and exotic scene in the summer garden. No two leaves are the same. Even the stems are highlighted with stripes. Grows more compact than other Elephant Ears, making it an excellent choice for a large container.

Very popular collectible hybrid, this is one plant that truly lives up to its cool name! Purple and green camouflaged leaves with a lime green stem. Each leaf of this Elephant Ear is like an artists canvas, no two are exactly alike. Splashed, splattered, sprayed, marbled, splotched - take your pick of adjectives to describe the unique pattern of lime green, chartreuse, purple, and near-black colors on each huge, arrow shaped leaf. Even its stout stems are colorful: light pink with dark rattlesnake-like stripes. The colors tend to be most vivid when sited in partial shade.
This plant will grow well in large containers or in the ground as long as consistent moisture is available. In the ground, the leaves can grow a whopping 2ft long by 18in wide and the plant can reach 6ft tall. This plant will also grow in shallow water.

Illustris Colocasia is a classic beauty. The heart-shaped, large purple-and-green leaves of Illustris are huge, and their dark highlights are stunning. This elephant ear is a lover of moist shade, but does best with a little dappled sunlight. It will tolerate boggy conditions. Provide light shade to full shade and consistently moist or boggy soil. It is a strong fast growing variety that does great in container, landscapes, ponds and patios.

Colocasia Thailand Giant - Taro Root

Taro is native to South India and Southeast Asia. It is primarily grown as a root vegetable for its edible starchy corm, and as a leaf vegetable. It is a food staple in African, Oceanic and South Indian cultures and is believed to have been one of the earliest cultivated plants. It is known by many local names and often referred to as "elephant ears" when grown as an ornamental plant.
The corms, which have a light purple color due to phenolic pigments, are roasted, baked or boiled, and the natural sugars give a sweet nutty flavor. The starch is easily digestible, and since the grains are fine and small it is often used for baby food. The leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C and contain more protein than the corms.
RECOMMENDED FERTILIZERS:
