Evergreen shrub or small tree with dark, leathery, aromatic, veined leaves, numerous inconspicuous yellow flowers and blackish berries. In cultivation young trees are cut back twice a year and sucker shoots develop from the roots. These long slender shoots furnish the bark that is the commercial product. Leaves are used as tea. Cinnamon is a very popular culinary spice and is also used in candy, gum, incense, toothpaste and perfumes. The oil is used in medicine as a carminative, antiseptic and astringent and source of cinnamon extract. According to the recent studies, Cinnamon may prevent or at least delay a type of diabetes that develops with age, say researchers in the US.

Clinical trials of a cinnamon extract are due to begin within a year, but nutritionist Richard Anderson says patients with type II or non-insulin-dependent diabetes could benefit now by adding the spice to their food or drink. "We recommend people take a quarter to a full teaspoon a day of cinnamon, perhaps in orange juice, coffee or on oatmeal," he says.

Clerodendrum inerme, Volkameria inermis, Wild Jasmine, Sorcerers Bush, Seaside clerodendrum, Clerodendron

Click to see full-size image Clerodendrum inerme, Volkameria inermis
Family: Lamiaceae   (Formerly:Verbenaceae)
Wild Jasmine, Sorcerers Bush, Seaside clerodendrum, Clerodendron
Origin: India, Malaysia
Can be used for bonsaiLarge shrub 5-10 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersFragrantSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This shrub ranges from tropical Asia to western Polynesia (Niue) and is found on most of the high sand islands of this region. C. inerme is an evergreen mangrove plant, which has found a place in our gardens, is able to thrive near the ocean at the high tide mark, making it a potential weed in the coastal environment. A hardy, straggling shrub, it reaches a height of 9-12 FT with closely arranged, almost round, shiny, deep green leaves. The plant is always in flower. The flowers are white and very fragrant, with spreading five corolla lobes, 1" long white tubes and long purple stamens. As the specific name implies, the stems are smooth and are devoid of thorns. The plant is not choosy about the soil and can even withstand droughts. Seaside clerodendrum, as its name suggests, grows well along the beach tolerating the salt spray of the ocean and the harsh rays of the sun. It is a versatile plant and can be grown as a topiary or as a bonsai. It is its hardy nature and the closely held bunches and leaves that promoted it into a garden plant. Clerodendrum inerme is a sun loving plant and a sunny spot should be chosen for it. The plant produces suckers and seeds. For making hedges, a large number of well-developed plants are required and, therefore, it is advisable to produce new plants through cuttings. Trimming the plant keeps the hedges in shape and also promotes production of new branches and leaves to fill up the gaps. As flowers are produced at the ends of branches, trimming robs the plant of its flowers. The plants is salt-, heat- and wind-tolerant.

Clusia rosea, Copey, Balsam Apple, Pitch Apple, Autograph tree

Click to see full-size image Clusia rosea
Family: Clusiaceae / Guttiferae
Copey, Balsam Apple, Pitch Apple, Autograph tree
Origin: America
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunShadeSemi-shadeModerate waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

A beautiful evergreen tree with large thick waxy leaves that are persistent. This native tree grows to 30' and spreads out. Can be grown in container as a small tree. The flowers are 1.5-2 inches wide and pink and white followed by apple like fruit. Requires little maintenance and is salt tolerant. Widely grown as an ornamental in tropical regions of the world. In Hawaii, it is commonly planted as a street, parking lot, or specimen tree. Plants readily spread from initial plantings to surrounding areas. Plants thrive in a variety of environments from dry barren lava landscapes to steep cliffs in wet areas. Ever-blooming, flowers are off-white with pink centers, slightly fragrant at night. Tolerates both sun and shade, blooms in shade easily. The seeds are presumably bird dispersed. Like strangler figs, can germinate in the crotch of other trees and grow as epiphytes. They send down aerial roots and will eventually smother the host tree. The leaves have a special effect: you may write with a sharp stick on the surface, and the writing will stay forever. Thus the common name of this plant!

Coccoloba uvifera, Sea grape

Click to see full-size image Coccoloba uvifera
Family: Polygonaceae
Sea grape
Origin: Tropical and sub-tropical America
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerantSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Sea Grape is now found growing wild along many seashores and is also used as an ornamental in gardens subjected to salty winds and drought. It has stiff, rounded platter-like leaves shading from yellowish to olive green with prominent veins. The flowers are inconspicuous but the long clusters of berry-like fruit which follow are striking and give the tree its popular name. Somewhat acid in taste, the fruit can be used to make jelly. Other members of the genus have even larger leaves and make attractive ornamental plants when grown in a glasshouse. Coccoloba prefers full sun. Pruning improves the shape when it is used in a garden landscape. It is both flood and drought tolerant.
