Anguloa sp., Tulip Orchid

Anguloa ruckeri
 Anguloa sp.
Family: Orchidaceae
Tulip Orchid
Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersFragrantDeciduousAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Tulip Orchids are rather large terrestrial and sometimes epiphytic plants with fleshy pseudobulbs longer than 20 cm. The long, lanceolate and plicate leaves of a full-grown Anguloa can be more than 1 m long. Two to four leaves grow from the base of each pseudobulb. The leaves are deciduous, and are shed at the start of each new growth.

The flowers of these orchids have a strong scent of cinnamon.

Anguloa clowesii grows in the mountains with very moist conditions at the roots. There is a dry season, and this coincides with the dropping of their deciduous leaves. The flowers emerge at the base of the newest growths in late winter to early summer.

Anguloa virginalis is a Anguloa endemic to Colombia.

Annona squamosa, Sugar Apple, Custard Apple, Sweetsop-Anon, Sweetsop, Atis, Sitafal, Seetha Payam, Araticum, Sharifa

Annona squamosa Kampong Mauve
 Annona squamosa
Family: Annonaceae
Sugar Apple, Custard Apple, Sweetsop-Anon, Sweetsop, Atis, Sitafal, Seetha Payam, Araticum, Sharifa
Origin: Tropical America
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterFragrantDeciduousEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Very highly regarded in tropical and subtropical areas. Fruits with sweet custard-like pulp are from 3 to 5 inches in diameter with a lumpy green skin and upon maturity the fruit has a bluish or white blush. Some varieties are developed that have a red blush or red skin which are much more attractive. At maturity fruits have a custard like white pulp with small black seeds and the sweet flesh is eaten fresh or used for milkshakes and ice creams. Sugar apples make great container plants, too, so if you don't have much space try growing these in a 10 or 15 gallon tub, and they will still reward you with a number of delicious fruit. Older trees may continue fruiting into January during warm winter. Trees reach full dormancy during cold winters. Varieties: Thai-Lessard, Kampong Mauve.
